I tried to play Fish's Laughlin video on my new computer..WinXP...and it said "error downloading codec". So I updated to Windows Media Player 9. Now is says "The source filter for this file could not be loaded.". Anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm thats weird it should work with Media Player 9.
Try right clicking on the file and saving it to your desktop and then opening it.

Same problem as I was having on my old computer. I needed a different codec to view it, but evey time I tried to download the codec, I got some kind of error. I'm really not a big fan of this whole .WMV thing.

Well the WMV is the best file type to have a video stay small in file size but the quality of video and sound is very good for the size of the file.
Jordan: its in the Main Section under Laughlin Video Is Up.
If you cant see the video but can hear it you need to download Windows Media Player 9! Then right click and save file as and it will work.

I had all the same problems. Just go to control panel -> add and remove programs, and remove any versions of Windows media player you currently have. Reboot. Then go to the microsoft download site for Media player http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp. Install and your good to go. There is one catch, if you have windowsXP you will not be able to uninstall Media Player 9, so they suggest to turn on system restore before you start the install.
late.

Great job fish! Being an "old fart" I would prefer the sound of screamin' engines as opposed to screamin' meemies, but I'll take what I can get! Thanks!

The same thing happens on OSX using the latest Win Media Player. Codec can't be found. Looks like the latest WMP from the Dark side is full of bugs. CRAP! Fish, go with Quicktime, You can't go wrong.....

Fish are your re-encoding under wmv9 or do you know of a video editor that already has wmv9 integrated?
We re-encode all our stuff. I first save on "raw" avi format then cut a low speed and high speed version. Both encodes are for progressive downloads.

Well I just save the files from the tape to AVI and then recently I was just using crappy Windows Movie Maker...the new version for XP and it encodes for WMV9...
