were pulling the automatic c6 out of a 69 f250 and it seems like its slipping a little. so were going to rebuild it. it is behind a 429. it is going into a 71 f250 LWB with the 429. this truck will be a prerunner, it will be street driven too.
when the tranny is apart being rebuilt, what should we really replace to make it last in the 300 mile races? we plan on manual valve body and a artcarr shifter. but what WILL break?
this truck isnt going to be a full blown racing truck, its going to be my dad and i having fun in he desert trying to finish the race. were not going to reallly compete with a serious attitude towards it or anything. we will be taking it slow too since we dont have all the $$$ for suspension. what im trying to say is we cant afford to replace everything in there for an offroad version, just the neccesaries.
thanks guys

the sprangs can break but the C6 is a stout that can handle lots of power right outta the box.... I suggest a good torque converter

You will use 2nd gear a lot in a c-6. Upgrade the 2nd gear servo and go with the largest 2nd gear band you can find. Art Carr sells a good band.

Which brand converter runs cooler?
What size/kind of cooler to use(how big)?
What stall is better to use?

The c6 in itself stock is a pretty beefy transmission, but if I was building it for my own purposes... i tend to be very picky on transmissions and break them often...
I would do the following (bold is required):
First off.. I buy all my parts from here:
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/c4_c6.htm
Ford "R" Servo
Upgraded Band Apply Lever
Stick with Wide AltoRed Band... don't use kevlar..
I like to go with drums that can accept more clutch material. 5 vs 3. You get a more apply area, meaning less slippage.
Get a new pump regardless if yours looks okay...
Shift kits never hurt
C6 torrington thrust bearing kit
Having Deep transmission pan is always good.
Regarding the torque converter... The stall you run, depends on the size of your camshaft.
Remember something.. when you use a high stall converter.. it builds up more heat in your transmission requiring more cooling capacity.
I personal like TCI converters.

I only trust my transmissions to Dana Sniff at 949-559-6563 or www.repliarm.com. He knows C-6, C-4 & other trans, over 25 years of experience. Just my 2 cents worth.

Id have Mogi do my tranny... TCS makes a good converter run as big of a cooler as you can fit or afford it cant hurt...

I know optimal running temp is 180 but a good alum 2 core radiator is just fine....
