I have a Ford Excursion with Gas engine and Automatic tranny - Ever since Las Vegas Terribles cup last year, it has had a little problem. Here is when it appened:
I was pulling a Trophy Truck with a tow strap off a K-Rail - When he was freed, he stomped on the gas not realizing we were attached and he pulled me backwards while I was in Drive and 4 Low -
Ever since then, When the truck is warm and I shift from Park to Drive, the tranny either has delayed engagement or does not engage. I shift to 1st, and it goes into gear usually however sometimes it needs a tap of the throttle.
It has been the same since that day and never gotten worse but it is concerning to be a medic and potentially have a transmission that may not allow me to get to a racer when needed.
So I beg to all my Race Dezert family for help. I live in Vegas and need someone to help me resolve it. Not asking for free stuff but resonable help to resolve please. I left it at Team Ford yesterday and they want a grand to pull it and tell me if it can be fixed or needs a new one - Needless to say - I dont have that kind of money or credit to find out they want to charge several more thousands to fix -
Any ideas?

sounds like it might of done some internal damage... Yeah I agree however, once in drive, it has full power and never has trouble again. Can start and stop in traffic ever day all day and it drives fine as well as pulls the trailer fine. I just cant come up with a few grand for this and hoped that someone had an idea...

here in vegas i would only trust competition transmission (873-4422) with my automatic work. they will let you know what is usually wrong with your transmission after a few road tests and a computer scan. they have always been good to the desert racers in the area.:D 3855 s valley view . just north of the gold coast hotel on the west side of the street, by shelton battery

I have had trucks that act that way for years.

What kind of condition is the fluid in? Has the filter/fluid been changed? Do you think it could be a linkage issue and it's not engaging in drive because the rooster comb is right on the edge of engagement?

Maybe the TT driver should return the favor and help you out, just a thought.

Fluid and filter changed shortly after it happened - seems ok with no burnt smell when I tried it. It still seems good now - Someone suggested I put the Lucus Tranny stuff in and it may help - It is strange cause it never slips or loses power - it runs strong all day long once the intial shift is done -

I know it can run like this for years also - except that I often have others drive this truck for the races and they dont understand how to deal with it, and when someone rolls their truck - I cant wait for it to engage...nor can they.

LOL - Yeah, funny part is one of his team members through a full water bottle at me from the stands as I was unhooking the tow strap. She said it was the alcohol and she was frustrated....Like many of you, I have to chalk it up as one of those racing things.

I'm not saying it isn't important or that it isn't annoying and probably fixed, I was just giving you my experience that I have also had this symptom for a long time and not had a trans faileur. But I would think who ever helped to break it should fix it.

From what you described, it sounds like a problem in the valve body.
