I was wondering if anyone has used/seen/bought one of their cage kits?

As some of you know, I bought a class 7/1450 Toyota. Well, the cage isn't real tight to the cab, and i'm a tall guy. After some thought and adult beverages we decided to re-do the top and rear hoop of the cage.

I found out about Off Road Solutions kit, it seems reasonably priced, and would save me a ton of time.

So yay or nay?

NO! or NAY! Is this a actual race truck or a pre-runner? Can you please post some pictures of what your cage looks like?

My plan was to race it in VORRA. The cage that's currently in the truck would pobably be OK for a short guy. In fact the guy I bought it from was really short. I'm 6'3"ish. Thus, the roof bars could be moved up into the cage about 2.5" to 3" to touch the roof. The rear hoop is also at the B pillar. It could be moved back against the rear of the cab about 6". It looks like 2 different people built it, one really good welder/fabricator, and one really bad one.

I have alot of welding and fab experiance, but its mostly in heavy duty/commercial/iron working. I know I could re-do it and bend all my own tube, I was just trying to save myself some time and heart ache by having it bent up by someone. I've spoke to the people at off road solutions, they sound knowledgable, and it made outa 1 3/4 .120 DOM. I also understand that I'd have to add some cross bars and gussets.
I just want the truck to be safe, pass VORRA tech, and get around the track. Thats it.

I'll try to post some picture's of the cage tommorrow.

Coming from a person who has installed one of those pos cages. They suck ass, dont waste your money. Build your own.

Well, I might make my own after all. They haven't returned my last couple phone calls to get more info.

What was bad about it? The fit?

Any way of just lowering the seat??? Just a thought....

The seat is going to have to mounted on the floor, we're going to run tubes underneth the floor and poke the seat mounts though the floor. It looks like everything will clear that way, and I'll fit OK, but I could gain alot more distance (head to roll bar) by moving the cage around and re-doing it.
Next time I'll do a full size truck :)

I was really hoping to find a good tight fitting rear hoop and A pillar bars. Everything else would be gravy after that.

Yeah looking at the pics moving the seat down and back is going to have to happen anyhow. Are you still looking to redo some of the cage? What is keeping you from doing your own work? And what is up with the center roof bar where it meets the A pillar? Need to flip the windshield bars and possibly run two roof bars. But at least with the windshield bars flipped all the tubes could converge on the A pillar at the same location. Looks like a fun new project.

I was trying to stay away from doing any of the bending. I figured I'd save myself alot of time that way. At this point I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I really think the cage needs to be re-done at this point. I'm probably going to start cutting it out Friday.

I take it you've looked at my MySpace page Movindirt, so you can see that I'm not a small guy :)
But I can't be the first big guy to race a Toyota. ;)

Just for info HardCharger, I doubt you will find any one out there who will have a pre-fab kit for you. In several other posts on other threads, many have listed names of companies that might do it. I wanted to cut a few corners too, so I took 7 different companies From Jegster to Autoweld, all either said they don't make them, or to my shock, they didn't even know what the standards for BITD SCORE MDR, etc were. I know a couple of good fab guys if your really in need. But if you have a fair knowledge of welding, a few days of practice of bending and you'll be a wiz...you'll just go through bunch of DOM or MOLY on the way :).

I just bought the tube. Got a good deal on it. (My cousin works for PDM Steel)

I think I've worked something out with NorCal Prerunners to bend the tubes up for me, all I'll have to do is put in gussets and cross bars.

Thanks guys for your help and opinions.

do not be afraid to cut the roof off to allow the best fabrication.you will end up burning the paint anyway.i am an hour north of sac if you need a hand you could spend a day at my shop and bend and fit up most of what you need.i need to do the same thing to my truck but i think it may be better to start with a new frame.ben 743

43Mod, Thank you.

I've already cut the roof off, and 95% of the old cage is out. There was probably alot of different ways I could have built, or not built and just sold, this truck. I'm still not sure if I'm making the right choices. But I guess I'll be that much better at building the next one. :)

Again, thanks 43mod, PM me, maybe we could work something out. Are you pretty well versed in using a bender? Again, I am not, with all of my experiacne coming from building handrail.

expert bender no.pretty capable yes.building a sound cage is not too hard to get done.as long as you do proper fit up of the joints and basic fab principles it will turn out fine.ben 530 682 7037
