Spring plates

Anyone ever weld tabs on stock spring plate? I'm looking into making some traction bars. Just curious if anyone had any good results on stock plates. I'm working on some drawings for a new piece in Sketchup, just not having much luck.

All the time....But this is a good chance to check and see if the factory plate is a little "weak" by design, or maybe needs a cover plate to protect the "u" bolt ends...
But yes they're plain steel, nothing special.
