Over the last couple years, unless you have something custom in mind, its almost cheaper to buy a trailer. I was going to build myself a 18' double axle flat/car trailer. By the time I priced out the steel, axles..etc....I was within a couple hundred bucks of buying a Pac West trailer from the place up the road.
I'm not saying don't do it or hating on building a trailer. I've built several. But for the average guy to source everything yourself, and your labor, you'd be money ahead to buy one.

if you do build one biggest thing to remember is your axle setting 60/40 toward the back.

I have to agree, it's usually cheaper to buy a trailer than build one. Or you can do what I did was find a trailer manufacturer who will build one to your specs.
I didn't want to have a fold down rear gate / ramp or ramps that I had to pick up and move to the rear. First of all it's hot here in Az. and if you have to pick up ramps your hands will get burnt.
So what I did was have a guy here in town make the back half of the trailer on a hinge with 2 hydraulic rams to move the back end up and down. Here are some pics so you better understand.
I put 30 D rings and a air compressor with tank underneath, fuel jug holders, spare tire underneath and built the box on the front. When it was all finished I took it down and had it sprayed with spray in bed liner. Everywhere I go everyone compliments it.
