View Full Version : 16 Inch Steel Wheels

I know I have asked this question before, but it was a while ago...I'm thinking about getting some 16" steel wheels made for my 9 car, and just want to know what everyone thinks in regards to me running them. I know in the rules it says you have to run 15" steel wheels, but as long as they are steel, I don't see anything wrong with it.
Give me your thoughts, most importantly the MORE racers. My car is apart and hopefully I will see all of you in December.

I would think to go with the 15'' wheel because you could get a taller tire which might help with the ride beacuse of the lack of travel that 9 cars have. Just a thought.

I'm more curious what the benefit would be...regardless, I would not support the change.

The only reason for the change would be the ability to run a trailer tire on all 4 corners like a 16 car, and only carry one spare available for the front or back. This would also open up a lot more options for tires, as there are only 2 right now, at least for the rear.
When the rules were written, there weren't too many 16" tires out there. As long as they are steel wheels, and the tire size is no bigger than a M/T, I don't see the problem. We (MORE/SNORE) made an exception for the M/T tires, that are "illegal by the rules" for being 33" tall, so I don't see where this is any difference.

Alright dont jump down my throat ANYONE, I saw this come up and I thought I would share. I drove my dads 1600 car this weekend after the race and we were messing around with setup IE shocks tires and wheels, anyway Mike Meehan 1699 came by and offered up some 16" wheels with 33" BFGs on them, not only was the tire lighter than the YOKs (both on centerlines) and the same heigth but we got 3mph faster out of them. I would like to see someone try it on a 9 car. I'm just sayn.

Just for the record SNORE and MORE did not make a change to allow M/T tires!!! At 18 PSI like the rule says they will be at when measured they are legal!!!! Isn't having a 16" wheel going to cost more than buying a 15" wheel!! If 16" wheels are going to be allowed why not just go with any wheel??

This class is in dier need of some rule changes due to availability of parts. It is going to get to the point of people not racing nine because of all the time and money spent trying to get cores, if you could even find them. We spent way too much in the tranny in our single seat. If Trophy lites are preping with 500 to a 1000 dollars per race there is something absolutly wrong with this class, as it is suppose to be a budget class. I spent a minimum of $1000 on a prep. And that is a prep where your in the car praying the whole time your racing. And if there does happen to be a debate about nine car rules again I think you should have to OWN a nine car in order to speak your mind in any said meeting. Just a poor white boys thoughts.

My .02: There is no real "Parts Shortage" in class 9. Stuff is a little harder to get and costs more but then so does everything else, try to find a decent $5 lap dance now a days for goodness sake! The beauty of this class is a 20 year old car can be as competitive as a new car. If change is made it needs to be agreed to at all sanctioning bodies or otherwise the cars will not be universal in their ability to race anywhere and you'll end up with a hermaphrodite. Rules are rules and a blatent turn your head attitude is not in the spirit of a limited class. Constant rules changes and special interests are what created the issues and pushed a lot of cars/drivers out of 16 and 5/16. Opening or discussing a rule change to save loot makes sense, but change for the sake of change makes no sense to me... Class 9 car owner.

I know that Jim at MORE said that no one would be disqualified for running 33" M/T's, I assumed SNORE was the same, but maybe not. I know in SCORE, they have to measure at 32" at 18lbs., per the rules.
I'm not saying there needs to be a rule change. All I'm asking is if I can run them without a big uproar of "breaking the rules". If they work out, then maybe it would be another option for tire combinations. Heck, I don't know if I'm even going to like them! It is going to cost me about $125 a wheel to get them made, but I'm sure the cost would come down if they were wanted in mass quantities. Custom Commercial is going to make them, and what is the cost of a 15" wheel right now?....last I heard it was $85...not too much different in price. Especially when you factor in the fact that you can buy trailer tires for almost half the price of Yoks or M/T's.
Honestly, as long as you meet the tire diameter requirement and the wheels are steel, then I don't see why you couldn't run any diameter steel wheel. I also don't see where this effects a 20 year old car running with a new one.

I am only nagging the tranny. I still maintain the front end is a pain but yes leave it be so Jeff won't throw a fit. If a fella wants more tire options I don't see any way he can gain an advantage with a 16" rim. Why are you old dudes so stuck on leave it the way it is. Times change ya old fart.
I do feel FORTIN shifters should not be aloud, totally rediculous and creates mass amounts of jealousy.

My perfect world would be to keep same rules, encourage all to ditch thier old chassis and go new 1600 style chassis and maximize current rules to the max.. focus on getting the entries up in every single race.. in the MORE series there (quick look) has been 26 total entires across all races.. only 7 have made every race.. get those 26 cars in each race would make $7800 payback to top 4 based on MORE schedule.. ..$4k to 1st alone each race...

I'm not bagging on the 16" deal but the rules are in place for a reason and if you want a change lobby for it otherwise it's not legal. Husky Chris your NUTZ, Haney is right, If you want a change go to the top, SCORE. I think the one size tire would be great. It would make your spares double, give your beam more ground clearance, and allow you to run more than two different rear tires, also allow BFG pit support for Mexico. All-Terrains are not a good BFG choice. I like it but I wouldnt be the first to try it. I would worry about spindle breakage, Ill let someone else "prove" them. Hell ya from me.

I talked to Bill Savage today, and he said if there was enough interest he would consider the change/exception, but not just on my asking. So I guess it is up to you guys, and especially the ones that have run SCORE, I would think, could have a stronger say. I've never run SCORE, and couldn't even if I wanted, because my car is not tagged.
My plan to get the wheels made is to use 16" spare (donut type) wheels. Custom and commercial is going to cut the center out and add a 5 lug VW, making a 16X4 steel wheel. I'm not sure what the weight will be, but I'm hoping that it will be comparable to the 15X5 (don't know the exact offset yet either). I think with the right trailer tire, you could hopefully save a few pounds over the M/T's or Yoks.
Cost = (donut tires junk yard) $15 + $90 (C&C) = $105 each
The advantages that I see:
1. About the same cost to buy
2. Cost could be cheaper overall due to less cost of trailer tires
3. Can run same tire on all 4 corners, reducing different spares needed.
4. Will allow you to keep ride height in rear and increase in front
5. Will allow more tire combinations, which would be a huge asset to anyone running SCORE.
6. Hopefully the wheel tire combination will reduce weight on rear, helping with unsprung rotating mass, reducing tranny stress.
7. The rear tires could have less bite, also reducing tranny stress.
8. Tires should be stronger, especially side wall
9. ...could look cool too.
Let me know if your interested. Either reply here or PM me.

I would be for this as mentioned above (and even promote it if I can buy your 15" stuff cheap.....must be the 5 lug though:D)You would think if we all were to switch or the majority ray(c&c)would come up with some closer pricing to the 15".Why don't you get a poll going on this site steve?
so you would also be changing the width requirements too?
Johnson954
October 29th, 2008, 21:25
I don't have any plans to change the offset, just don't know what can be given based on where the center mounts to the rim, strength wise. I would keep it the same if I can...
And I only have 4 lug stuff:(, and don't plan on selling anything until I know for sure the 16" wheels will work!

We are planning to do the the Jan MORE race. The wheels won't effect us coming back, but after the car gets fixed, we are going to do some testing to make sure the car works well with the way the rear geometry is changed. At that point it would be nice to have the wheels, but that's a couple of months away. I'm going to need to buy some new wheels and tires also, and I could save some money going with the 16".
Having kids is what's delaying the operation! But I think my brother and I have figured out why that is happening, and we have the problem fixed!!!
