I'm looking for a durable, cheap race radio and intercomm setup for our class 9 racer. I've heard the Yaesu's are decent. Any advice?

Thanks,
Rosco

I just got one of the Icom radio's and a couple of the small Kenwood's and they both work goo from the guys that used them. I think most shops carry them and last I talked with John from Mobile Radio he had some deals. If I get more it will be the Icom.

try the Kenwood TM-271A. It's cheap and easy to mod, only one resistor to clip off.

Ill get one of these....What is the advantage of modding a race radio? I am in Mexico, so I dont think we have all those restrictions as you guys in the US, so what would I gain?

My understanding is that modding them like that creates a lot of interference on the channel (correct me if I'm wrong). I looked into buying a decent amature Kenwood or Yaesu for the adjustability but after reading the problems created from modding them, decided to buy something that was designed to work in the 150+Mhz. We're using the Icom F-121 and Kenwood TK and are real happy with both.

Support those who support the sport. Mobile Comm/PCI/RLH and if you listen to the Weatherman at the B1K you'll hear a bunch of complaints by him Re modded radio's...

I'm not incorrect if one of the mods includes a linear amplifier. Sure, it works great for you but it screws everybody else. If that's what your after then prolbem solved. I'd rather not be the guy that everyone is cussing for screwed up communications.

Your life may depend on your radio, do not go cheap on the radio. Get at least a fifty watt kenwood. or even a roadmaster. both will work well or look to see if anyone has a used tk for sale.

I know this thread is a bit old but Vertec has given me the best luck. I get all my parts from John at Mobile Radio and so far everything has been perfect (and man he is fast at shipping stuff!). And I will second not getting modded radios. I for one have heard the ghost like sound of people bleeding into my channel and I hate it. If you spectate or ALMOST NEVER key the mic, then a ham is a good cheap radio. BUT if you use your radio at a race where there are a lot of us using radios, its not very nice!

Who said anything about a linear amp......in fact most of the bigger teams run amps(kickers) with there "race radios".The Mod that they are referring to does not include boosting watts.

Acme is right we should support the people who support racing......maybe they could come up with a budget radio for a budget class

And as far as needing a reliable radio IF YOU NEEDED HELP IN A REMOTE AREA AND WERE LIMITED TO 15 FREQS THAT WHERE PRE-PROGRAMMED INTO YOUR "RACE RADIO" IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A SCAN FEATURE TO MULTIPLE RACE FREQS OTHER THEN THE 15 THAT MIGHT NOT BE USED IN THE AREA WHERE YOU ARE RACING.....PLUS I HEAR THEY MAKE GREAT SCANNERS TOO
