This is one of the few remaining rallies (after the new dakar) that happen each year in north Africa around october.

Pharaons (http://www.jvd.it/2008/index.php?lang=uk)is an FIA/FIM international cross country rally that circles the Egyptian sahara.

This year 08 was the 25th edition of this rally, 7 stages 3000km of completely different and diverse terrain dunes, sand flats, rough rocky terrain and more dunes.

100+ participants

I hope next year will see some North American competitors, I think its very challenging for you to experience this type of racing, so get ready for it next year & start looking for good sponsors

Both XJs finished the race both are mildly setup nothing but a cage, fuel cell, strokers & some KINGs. No fancy suspension just the stock front geometry

The white finished 10th & the orange finished 12th

did mark miller race one of the toregus

I think this one is different from the one miller is racing because this isnt the 4wd dakar VW touraeg

This is a TDI ( I think V10 Diesel monsters ) 2wd Buggy, unfortunately both racers didnt finish the race because of accidents both of them happened in the dunes area .

I think its because of their 2wd & long WB 120" + they didnt manage to control their speed ontop of the dunes & both of them overshot the dunes & landed nose down

Hey guys,
I was out with the Rally this year for 7 days of coverage for several magazines and a news paper. The VW Buggies did not have the V10 diesel engine which we all dream of, but in fact they had V6 Turbo Diesel engines with a capacity of 3 litres and an output of 290 HP.

These are recent modifications, as a coupla years back, Stephan Henrard who owns these 2 buggies, won the pharoans rally in one of them but with its original 1.9 twin turbo diesel engine which developed 215hp.

On the other hand this years racers were not that familiar with dunes, as the first one flew off a Slip-Face at over 160km/h rolled and tumbled after a bad landing to halt. Could be bad visibility, but then again if you cant See when you're among dunes instantly reduce your speed.

The second one was a better driver as he managed to come in 3rd on stage 2. But on stage 3, he was over taking a Bowler when met a sharp one, similar scenario as 2 days earlier. Sad ending for both cars which were rented by occupiers from Stephand Henrard himself and his Henrard Racing Team.

The day before the race, I tried taking some photos of the Engine in the buggy but the team manager stopped me from doing so, so only then did I find out about the specs.

Ill post more photos when my articles come out soon. I have some interesting airborn ones

The Orange Jeep has a lil bit modified front arms, extended a bit, makes a difference im sure!! As for the White one you are right, the thing is though, its the only one where the engine was assembled and crated to Egypt where it was just dropped into the bay. Its said that all stroker kits assembled here are not as good.

The long wheelbase Wrangler got a Head Gasket on the 1st stage as temperatures did reach 50 c!!, that was replaced and raced stage 2, then Blew the engine on the 3rd day. He arrived at Sitra and announced the sad news. It too has a stroker kit assembled in Egypt.
