I"m a welding student and in my Welding Theory I class we have to do a couple (3 total) of article analysis. . .I did my first one on NASCAR teams use of welding to construct their chassis/suspension components. . .
I was hoping to find something closer to what I'm interested in. . .desert racing. . .
Does anyone know of any good articles about fabricating custom desert racing trucks??? They don't have to be anything fancy. . .our reports are pretty basic. . .the instructor only wants an synopsis of the article. . .answer a couple of generic questions about the article, etc., it's a pass fail grade for each paper and the only requirement for the articles is that they deal with welding. . .
I have a back-up article about the welding processes used in making the Ford GT's all aluminum chassis but I was hoping for something closer to my interest. . .and another one on the fabrication of a Bonneville Salt Flats hot rod, but I was trying to save the Bonneville one for the last report because it has to be a group effort and there is one other guy in my class that is into motorsports and he has an old '63 Chevy II so I figured that would be good to save for that. . .
So if anyone knows anywhere good to look I would appreciate the help. . .
I already checked Miller, Lincoln, etc. . .Dirt Sports Mag used to have a cool website that had old tech articles as well as the Masterpiece in Metal articles, but it appears that they have removed that section fro their website as I can't find it. . .
Thanks!!!

Would it be improper to use a build up thread here on the RD forums?? There are a LOT of top notch machines that the builders have spent a lot of time documenting the build on. Maybe not quite enough specific welding info, but some threads should suffice I would imagine. So long as you give credit to the original writer, and the forum where it was posted, you should be OK I would assume. After all, any thread here would be automatically subject to peer review, and there would be documented in depth discussion on technique and application.

That would be fine as long as there is an adequate discussion of welding. . .do you know of one in particular that talks quite a bit about welding. . .it can even be about the jigging and fit-up process as long as it's more than just "we welded this with a Miller blah-de-blah TIG welder. . .isn't it cool". . .no offense to anyone meant there. . .I'm just trying to put what I need in perspective that's all. . .

Yes; DUMP! has put several fantastic builds up for review here in the projects section. He was working for Herbst Racing, until they lost their minds and let him go a few months ago. Great topics like tube joining, suspension attachment points, what type of steel to use where, how to end a tube and WHY.
