The 65 Mustang has a T5 transmission with 370 HP motor. At the road track, Willow Springs, it just started returning to neutral from 3rd gear, I was downshifting from 4th to 3rd under braking, no power was being applied.

If I let the clutch out right away while braking, the tranny would stay in 3rd.

If I let the clutch out after coasting, it would slide into neutral.

If I then returned it to third and apply power it would stay just fine.

Under load it was fine, no load it wanted to go to neutral.

Just was wondering if this is an adjustment, since it would slide out when not under load, or if it the tranny starting to die...I here that this tranny is weak in third.

Thanks

John

The T-5 is weak period. It's a lot of work, but worth it (IMO) in an early Mustang to put in a Tremec instead. It's a little larger physically, but modeled after the T-5, and far superior.

Worn sychros, a chipped or broken gear, or damaged fork can all cause that to happen.

370HP is a bit much for a T5. A Tremec or viperized T56 is the way to go.

Thanks,

They said it was week in 3rd and this may be a sign of things to come. A couple of performance tranny guys said since I'm not drag racing, to run it until it breaks...it might be close to broken. Just in case a have another to get me through the weekend, but I'm looking for a tr 3650 or tko 500 or 600 in the meantime, pref with a .82 (or whatever) rather than the .68 5th. Whatever the T5 has is too tall to accelerate well in the long straightaways. Please feel free to PM me if you know of a good one for sale.

Thanks,

John
