View Full Version : 1996 and older f150 fender installation?

I normally spend hours each day researching stuff on here when I have any questions. So far I haven't been able to find anything to help me mount my fenders on my truck, so I decided to start a thread. Hopefully I can get some help :D.
Most of you guys know that is a major pain to do fenders on an older f150. The stock fenders have everything bolted to them, and are the core support between the cab and grill assembly. Once you take off the fenders there is nothing there anymore. I was just looking for advice on how people mounted their fenders with keeping all the stock items. Either making all new mounts for everything, or just fender mounts and zip-tieing up the stock wheel well to the fender mounts. I am just trying to gather as many people's opinion's before I jump into this.
Here is how the truck I stripped was set up for reference.

You can skin the outer fender, leaving the inner as a core support. Everything will still bolt up in the same location. Or, you can get the fender core support kit from autofab.

The cool thing about the autofab support is that the bracketry allows for everything to bolt to the stock location. The only thing you will lose with the autofab kit is the hood springs.

Yeah I didn't even think about doing that when I put fiberglass on my 89 F150 when I was 17................yeah my dad and I made very cheap brackets but they actually held up surprisingly well considering how I drive and I sold the truck to my cousin who has had the truck 8 feet in the air

I didn't think of it either. I was talking to my friend the other day and he said, "why don't you just plasma cut off the stock fenders and leave the core support?" I had not even thought about that, then I cam on here. Sounds like a solid plan for doing it.

It wasn't easy, but I started today. Definitely a pita. Then again, this is my first time really doing anything like this so it's a learning curve also. I will try to get some pictures up tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it done by then. Right now I am driving around with a core support but no fenders .

ha ha sweet, I was actually going to tell that it might ( iam not sure) be easier to get a spot weld bit and drill out all the factory spot welds that hold the outer fender skin on, but I am going to say I too late

I just used an air hammer. Took it off pretty quick, but now I just need to grind them down to make it look better. The hardest part was accessing the spot welds without taking everything off. Honestly if I could fab, I almost guarantee that would be faster for a first time.

I got them a little better, but I dropped my truck off for some work. I am getting the fenders "massaged" a little to fit better.

Looks good Mike, you did a nice job skinning those fenders. Sometimes it's easier to let a pro get the allignment dialed in. Keep us posted, i'd like to see the finished product.
