On a light class 10, can I run a 091 o should I go to mendeola? building c-10 first to practice, don't want to spend the extra $ since already have the built 091. if its a mendi do I need the 2D or I have to go necessarily to 5th gear?

You'll need that 5th gear. Trust me.

Pinkie (a 12 car) was only able to keep up with the Fortins and Mendeola's with her bus box in short tight lap races. The 30 pounds less spinning mass of the VW transaxle helped Pinkie to be very competitive in the tight technical races....That was in a 12 car, I'm sure that in a 10 car you would really have a hard time keeping up with the Mendeolas with a VW tranny......I know a few people are even stepping up to the Fortin 6 speed............
I have straight out FLOGGED my 2D in my prerunner and it's been awesome!
Over 5000 miles between services, just changing fluid once in a while.....I doubt that Mendeola recommends that kind of treatment of their trannies but it's nice to know that they can take it.......If your as big a Nimrod as me......
That's with Pab driving too......Oh yeah he always tells me he totally cruises it when he take it prerunning......Then the guys get out and tell me they Beat Steve Hengeveld through Matomi wash.......Oh yeah just cruising.........Those trannies are bullet proof!!!!

Thanks guys, I figured I should go with the mendi, but was hoping somebody tell 'man it's ok, don't worry about it' and not spend the extra $$, so the question is 4 or 5 gear, I guess the answer is going to be again go to the top, but jumping from 091 to 2D, and then to MD5....... maybe a used one, but I don't see a lot of them in the classifieds, any idea where can I find it? thx

The Medeola Fortin and Hewlands are stronger. If it's your first effort at a 10 car and you are using a VW engine, you might want to try the 091, but also leave room for the Mendeola.
5 Speed is needed to get the torque to pull the washes 2nd or 3rd and the top end for the long flats 5th.
10 cars can go very fast, you'll need the 5th gear if you are going to be competitive, but being competitive is not cheap. Fortin and Hewlands, I think the dgn hewland is better than the dg, Fortin can tell you about those.
If you are just figuring out if you like it, you are running a VW engine and learn how to baby the tranny, you'll learn a lot before you spend the 5-10k a heavier duty and faster 5 speed tranny will get you. (I don't think the 2D is a 5 speed, you'll use the 5th gear in the wide open sections.) You'll probably be easier on your new transmission too. Wide-open baja runs the 091 tranny's, but I think their motors are about 140hp, and I think they are the side shifters...better reverse.
Weddle or Kevin at TransWest can help you too....calling after the 1000 might get you better answers, if they are busy now.
I'd use the 091 to get your feet wet and test the car...maybe for a race or two, or until it breaks, which maybe a long time.

I have 002 built with all the best stuff with a pyramid case in my 4 seater and drive my car hard it has many Baja trips and desert trips on it. It has held up very well. One trick is to use a clutch disc that has the springs in the center hub. If you want to save money run your trans. get your feet wet upgrade later.

The radio signal mathematical algorithm has just been sent to your prerunners transmission that will begin the deconstruction. All warranties, guarantees and good faith handshake promises are now null and void. :p

Now your really asking for it. LOL!!
