View Full Version : Eclipse x2 Lights

I have the two large halogen lights but they are so heavy and make the bike handle so much different. I was wondering if anyone has gone this route with the eclipse x2 lights? Will a stock stator on a ktm 400 run them? www.trailtech.net and they are on the front page.

I run them on my stock Raptor and have had no problems.

Do they give you enough light? They are for my dads bike I have the baja designs halogens which i love but he wants a little smaller application but is worried about them not being enough.

Why not one 8" HID? I think that's my route when time to get a real off road light.

Just throw a Diablo on there and call it a day

racing or just riding?I raced with them at Cal city and when I got passed by fastercaster I thought I was suddenly in a stadium from his lighting. They are brite but I think if you`re useing them for racing or pre-running you might want more lite.

I run 2 8" halogens and 2 HID nightrider helmet lights and I still wish I had more light!

The Baja Designs Diablo HID light is a awsome all around HID light. Really good for trail riding and speeds up to about 60-70mph.To power the Diablo on you're KTM400 you must either modify the stator which is a simple ground float or have the stator rewound by Baja Designs.:D

Ya i ride with two 8 inch halogens at speed and they work just fine for me. My dad will be just riding with them.

"just riding" then as mentioned the BajaDesigns Diablo is a great light... and looks factory. But most bikes will need a rewind just because of the AC output, and DC is needed.
There's other options too.
A 4" HID doubled up is a GREAT light array... and you don't lose too much from the dual 8" HIDs. When you drop down from dual 8" HIDs to a dual 4" setup... surprisingly, it's not a huge difference. And the mount you can fabricate can actually provide more protection... so you don't have big lights to break.
My future hard running light (for race, or high speed desert) will definitely be dual 6" or dual 4" ... depending on quality of light and lense options. The dual 8" are overkill when the light dispersion is the same from a smaller light (with technology, 4" can do as good as an 8")

I just did a UFO DHH fairing with the trailtach MR-16 HID's mounted in it. One spot, one flood. It worked very well till the flood bulb fried. I'm going to get one of the X2's. Since they use the larger 4" flood, I'm hoping it will hold up a little better.

The X2 is a huge improvement over stock, but I would want more light if I was racing at night. My main goal was as much light as I could get away with on a street legal bike, the X2 looks like a stock set-up and has better spread than the halogen bulbs. I have a 530 exc and upgraded my stator/rectifier to trail tech's 100w version as well since having both lights on draws about 70w I believe, the stock stator is like 65w unless you add wire to the short pole to get you up to the 75-80w range, and of course float the ground and such since HID has to be DC power. I do not believe the stock rectifier will handle this mod though, check into it. I also picked up their wiring switch which gives you both lights on high without the low having to re-arc. High beam takes a while to power up, others have used other switches which leave you blind for 4-5 seconds.

I hooked the low/flood up to the running light circut for the same results.
Link to there switch?

Just another item to spend more $ on! I don't really need it right now but when I do I'm ging to go the dual 4'' or maybe 6'' or a Diablo. So many options right now though, which is definitely a good thing! But I should probably spend the $ on suspension first to be able to maximize the lights at night. Great thread btw....

Here is the link to the generic switch, I had called and they have the switch already set up to plug into my KTM and the X2. The switch replaced my stock kill switch since it has one integrated. My system was pre-wired by trail tech and the low beam was the smaller top spot light, the high beam on the switch then added the lower 4" flood light. Of course any combo that gets the job done is all that you need. The switch I have also has an unused additional wire in the headlight area that can provide power to an accessory. I also converted my other lights to dc switched power.

Let me add...
The 8" trail tech light called "the extreme race light"... that uses the Two 2" SCMR16 HID's and one 4" SC4 HID integrated for powerful light output. It claims, even from Trail tech... "Beam pattern designed for technical trail riding. Optimized for speeds less than 50 mph."
So for the X2, I'm sure you understand it's not going to be as bright at the "extreme race light" or offer as much dispersion. Definitely a slow cruiser trail light.

Hey Johnny, either you can't see at night or I'm slow.... I could see good enough from the 2 MR16's that my pace at night wasn't to far off My day speeds.

;) heehee...
Well, I run with the Diablo for my night runs, free-riding and such.
I prefer and use dual HIDs (8") when night racing... or wanting speeds above 50ish. As yaaa... I'm pinned or up there in speed with duals, something a Diablo would leave me blind. And no, I'm not wearing bottle glasses just yet. :o
I run one dual just out in front of me, and the other "down the road". It helps tremendously for those on the gas, on the brake events.
And my day speeds I'd have to say... are a tad better than my night. I've not refined my night speeds to where I'd like them to be just yet. I have a ways to go to get there. I'll be practicing those night speeds this weekend, down in San Felipe area on 1000 course.
You can see here (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/johnnyairtime/RIDING%20Pics%20-%20all/2046324258_77b28c52cc_b.jpg) that two lights aren't always key. As I have one off, to save on Battery (and I didn't need it just yet - not dark enough)... the KLX-R wasn't doing so well with the draw on 2 HIDs. And we even cut our tail light, so it wouldn't add to the draw. (as seen here (http://planetpinned.com/play.php?vid=246), in the rider exchange at minute 6:58)

J-
You know, I've always run with a single 8" HID and always thought it was more then enough and couldn't understand why you would need 2 of them but that right there COMPLETELY makes sense!!! LOL

For the price of on X2...
You could always run out... buy two of these (4");
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=CSM&MfrPartNumber=99004&CategoryCode=3151
Or these (7" - but a bit big);
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=CSM&MfrPartNumber=99000CSK&CategoryCode=3151
Make a cheap simple mount... and have plenty of light.
Crash... break one, and replace for almost as cheap as just one X2 bulb!!
;) ... just tossing ideas all of your way, as there's many options.

I love my dual 8" HID setup from Baja Designs. They worked great this weekend, thanks guys!
I will say it does seem a tad heavier in the front, but not too bad. The XR600 is already a pig anyways, haha.

You have the Gen1 version... or the more recent Soltek versions, with Ballast/Igniter in the light housing?
The older or original (GEN1), I owned for years. And have since ran the newer Soltek versions. Man... POUNDS difference! And you can barely tell the newer Solteks are up there in comparison.
The older... were like riding a woman up on your beach cruiser handlebars. :o

I have the new Soltek's (brand new as of last week)
My only complaint was riding in the heavy dust. Looked like I was riding into a huge white wall! lol.
Im going to look at ordering one of the yellow lexan covers for the flood.

I would have too with the stock light. That is kinda my point about how bright they are in the dust. I might have been better with no lights at all at that point, lol.

Thanks for all the input this did turn out into a good thread. I think my dad is going to go with x2 with two helmet lights.
