Once you up about $6,000 into one, they run pretty good!!

You really need to be re-geared to allow the 4 banger to spin 33's It made a pretty big difference on my ranger.

don't get a 2.3l. i have one in one of my trucks. it sucks. no quick bolt ons for it. if u r going for a ranger, just get the 4.0

I beg to differ, there are way more performance parts for the 2.3!

An easy, and relatively cheap route for the engine is:

1992-1997 2.3 engine without head.
1985-1989 Turbo 2.3 head and intake manifold
1998-2001 2.5 crank and header
Econo 2.5 rod/ piston/ ring kit from Esslinger
Roller Cam kit with #2277 cam from Esslinger (oversized valves, & 2283 springs)
Mill head to get compression around 10:1
Good Valvejob
Adjustable cam gear

The above set-up should put you somewhere around an honest 160-175hp. The whole set-up should be less than $2500. If you have a few more bucks, spend it on porting the head, and you can add more power...

I have a 94' Ranger with a 2.3 w/4.88's and 33" bfg's. It lags like a legless cow but its one of those engines that lasts forever. If you ever get a chance, go to a corr race and check out the pro-lite trucks. Alot of them run esslinger 2.3's and they aren't to much slower than a pro-2.(My opinion of course)
