Gonna get my G/F a dirtbike for Christmas and have been seeing 03-06 Yamaha TTR 125LE's on craigslist for $1000 - $1600. Seems like a good deal as she is a beginner and could use the electric start. Also looking at a couple of Honda CRF-150's... Any suggestions or things I should look out for? Thanks in advance!

Yamaha TTR 125 is a very nice bike. I would go with that.

Perfect bike for her to learn on. And there are more desperate sellers than buys right now!

The TTR is a great bike. It will last forever. The CRF is more of a race bike.

I agree that e-button makes it super easy for a gal that's learning. As said the crf150 is much more of a race bike for boys, the closest Honda to the ttr125 I think would be the xr200 which is also a great first bike.

Actually, the CRF150F is far from a racebike. You guys are confusing it with the CRF150R which is a downsized CRF350/450R. They haven't made the XR200 since that picture was taken in your avatar Chase!!! :)
Both have e-start and will last forever. IMO Honda has a little better o/a quality and better resale in the end.

Doh! Sorry, I guess haven't paid much attention to the learner bikes in a while. Looks like the Honda crf150f and the Yamadog tt125 are equivalent. Mea Culpa.
My vote would be for the Honda then, simply because I know of a lot of xr200s still running strong as beginner bikes!!! Hmm.. All four scooters in my garage are Honda too.

I'm a girl, therefore, listen to me ;)
If she has NEVER ridden a dirtbike before, and doesn't have much experience on bikes in general, then here are some good options:
Honda XR 100. Great beginner bike, and she most likely won't be afraid to ride it, since they are more mellow in the power range.
Honda CRF-150F. Another great beginner bike, you will notice a difference with teh XR 100 when climbing hills. When I went from my XR 100 to the CRF150F, this is where I noticed the biggest improvement. So, if she isn't teeny tiny, I would reccomend the 150.
If she has decent experience, and is an aggressive rider:
Honda CRF150RB (the 150R Big wheel). I LOVE mine. I am 5'3'', and 110 pounds and this bike works pretty well for me. We adjusted the Sag, added some taller bars and clamps, and it worked out pretty well. The only downfall is that it's a bit awkward when standing up, so I feel a little big for it there.
CRF230f. I have never ridden this bike, but from what I understand, it's similar in power to the 150f, but a little bigger.
I have had all of these bikes with the exception of the 230, and each one was a GREAT bike. I also have a CRF250x that I ride on the trails, and mostly Baja.
So, my question to you is, How tall is she? And what will you be using the bike for? Motocross, or trails? Without that info, it's pretty hard to answer any questions.
Hope that helps!

HAHAHA you guys are funny... Right now I am leaning towards the Yamaha, like Mike said there are more desperate sellers than buyers and I'm gonna get a steal. She more or say grew up around dirtbikes as her dad rides and got me into it. We ride quads and last year I borrowed a friends bike, Suzuki RM250 and she's been wanting two wheels every since.
I thought about getting something for both of us as I have a quad but am now more inclined to just getting separate bikes because I wanna 450 and I'm gonna spend around $1200 for hers.

She's about 5'5" and has ridden before but is def a beginner. A lot of Ocotillo and some dune riding maybe when she gets better.

My boyfriend bought me my first dirt bike about a year and a half ago. He got me the Honda CRF150RB bike. This is an awesome bike, but I realized that it isn't really for a beginner adult. It is a race bike and I wanted to learn by putting around, which this bike doesn't like to putt at all. I kept it for a year, but never felt really comfortable on it. Now my 12 year old nephew rides it and makes it look like a breeze! So I am back to just riding the quad again.
My sister got a CRF150F and that is a completely different bike than the R. Hers is perfect for trail riding. She loves it, but it is a little heavy compared to the R.
Hope this helps you a little.
By the way, it was the best gift I ever got from anyone, so don't feel stupid for buying your GF a dirt bike. I do think it should be in your name though, just in case! :)

I definitely don't feel stupid she is very deserving of the bike. We went to the Stealership to look at bikes and the CRF150f was clearly the bike for her but right now for the price I most likely will get the Yamaha.

The Yami TTR 125L is a great beginner bike. I'm "almost" 5'2" and this bike was manageable, light enough and had enough power to tractor up some good hills. You can always upgrade if she really gets into riding or want to become competitive. Good luck and you are a good boyfriend! ;) Those who play together usually stay together... going on 26 years for me and the old guy!

If she can ride a KDX 200 is a great used bike for trail riding. The KDX has a very mild power band.

Some guys are confusing the CRF150R which is the replacement for the CR80, with the CRF150F (an air cooled motor), which is the XR100 but with 50 more cc's.

Both the Yamaha and Honda are good bikes. But the electric start is the icing on the cake of your lady is gonna be the one that rides it. I guarantee she would rather push a button than play "kickity kick".

Alright, that's it! I am tired of guys thinking girls can't kick start a bike!!! This leads me to believe that you all think women are A) Lazy, B) Incapable of starting a Bike, C) Feeble and weak... If the Woman is going to be riding, then she darn well be able to start the thing properly! [/feminist rant]
With that being said, I can't even touch the ground properly on my lowered CRF250x, so the push start saves me in certain situations. BTW, if you don't plan on riding often, kiss that battery GOOD BYE.
Used CRF150Fs are probably going for pretty cheap. I got my '06 CRF250x which is PRISTINE for 2400... It certainly is the buyers market today, so take advantage!

Who said they can't kick a bike? I believe Ashley Fiolek, Tarah Geiger, Sarah Whitmore, and Jessica Patterson can kick them over just fine (not to mention my butt:D:o)
Blakjak is just looking for a bike for his girlfriend to LEARN on. Now when you were learning how to ride how many times did you stall out and wished for the magical "E" button? She's gonna be learning how to ride and stalling quite often, as everyone does when they learn. I'm sure she would feel much better after a ride being tired from riding and not from playing "Kickity Kick" all day.

GOOD Point. Do you know how much energy I saved on my Baja ride from using that button? I agree with you there, for sure! I guess I see it as a luxury, and a privilege. Growing up my whole life kicking, kicking, kicking... May have made me a bit resentful... :o:p You can definitely APPRECIATE it much more though if you were raised on a kick start.

Grrrrr. ;):) When they have a linkage suspension and a few SX & MX championships I'll consider it.
Until then I'll stick to riding my "Piano".;):D

She can definitely kickstart a bike but like Mike said this is about convenience! When she gets better and is ready we will most likely purchase a new 4 stroke 250 but even then with the "Magic Button". Thanks Everyone!!

Congrads on having a girlfriend that is into what you like. My wife won't even ride our 4-wheeler let alone go to one of my races. But if you are condidering the HONDA CRF-150R, I bought my son an 07 CRF-150 and there was a recall on the cam and timing chain. Make sure if you buy one that it has already been retrofitted. By the way, I'm selling my son's CRF-150R that he has only ridden about 6 total hours. He loves the Banshee to much and won't ride the bike. It honestly still has the show room look and smell of a brand new bike. So if your interested email me and I will send you photos and discuss a price. I haven't advertised anywhere yet so it's not out there yet. But it is for sale.

I'm very lucky to have a g/f that is also my riding partner and supports ALL of my off-road endeavors! Reason as to why she's up for her own bike!
