My IMS gas tank has developed some cracks around the breather and quickfill fittings and they have gotten bad enough that the tank has started to leak. Does anyone know a good way to fix it? I can't afford a new tank that is for sure. I was hoping there was some kinda silicon or something that would work.

Thanks,
Trent

I will try calling them. The number you listed was not the correct number though. :)

I think this is the number: 800-237-9906

Some guys can air weld em. like how they fix farings on the road racers.

IMS said that there isn't an approved way of repairing them and all of the various silicones and compounds will eventually flake off because the plastic is so porous. They did offer to hook me up on a discount on a new tank though.

Thanks,
Trent

That kind of repair on that kind of plastic requires a type of "welding" if you will. You cant glue it. It actually has to be fused with a type of hot gun. Try calling a place called, Triall3Sports. Its in San Clemente Calif. They make bike cases(10 speed) out of that same kind of material and may be able to help you out. They helped me out with some plastic stuff and did really good. I just needed info. I dont think they will do it for you but they might, never know.

If your tank is cracked enough were it can leak all welding will do is serve as a band aid tell your tank falls again. Plus most of those welders are designed to weld thinks like fenders. Who knows if welding will heat the area around the weld to much and weaken your tank even more. I could be wrond and you may be perfectly fine but it just seems like you best bet is to just buy a new tank and save yourself some headaches. Or you an do what we use to do in the old days with the aluminum tanks and JB weld it or find an epoxy to fix it for the time being.

Yep, I would have to agree there. Fuel in the croch area doesnt feel too good.

I am going to have a local guy try plastic welding it. WE will see how it holds up and I will update this thread down the rode sometime.
