Got a question for ya Jon, what is a spotter and what is a rover?

DRIVE Jon
December 9th, 2008, 01:42
Hey Jamie,

A "Rover" is a truck or bike with a radio...keeping tabs on a section of the course.

A "spotter" is a person positioned up-course form S/F...who spots car numbers and calls them into the time-keeping person(s).

You know...like what I was supposed to do for you at the SNORE night race:) except I couldn't see the numbers to save my life:eek: nothing like spotting numbers at night...with vehicles at speed! That was a crazy night....I'll never forget that kid who crashed out in the bed of the truck and woke up in the parking lot of BBs hotel:D

Good Times!

Later...

What race frequency do we check in on? 151.625?

Yes. 151.625. Jon and Brian are finishing up a detailed set of instructions for each position. We will also have a meeting before the event. More then likely we will do a meeting Friday night and another one Friday morning for people that are driving out the day of the race.

Ok. I'm still not sure when we'll be there, Friday or Saturday morning, but I'll try to check in on that frequency. We usually like to hang out by the trussels, I'll have to check out the map and figure out where we might hang out. Wish I could help with a check point but it would be difficult with to do with the people I'm taking (if they're not feeling it we might have to leave the race early)

Got a question for ya Jon, what is a spotter and what is a rover?

Hey Jamie...I am going to try to explain the "spotter" job description again. Jason had the same question. We will update the website with a description more like this below.

A spotter usually sits just prior to Start/Finish...maybe a 1/4 to 1/8th mile up course. The spotter "spots" car numbers of the vehicles approaching Start/Finish and communicates the numbers the Start/Finish/timing crew on a a discrete frequency. This also gives time to figure out what lap the vehicle is on, and what flag to wave so the flag-person is ready. It is actually a pretty important task...I have done it...it is cool...can actually be hard to spot numbers with vehicles in dust...night races are really hard! Binoculars are a good thing to have...as well as goggles. At night...it is just plain tough...a powerful flood light or light tower might help....or just memorize each vehicle..but who can do that;)

Spotters sometimes are also used in a similar capacity ahead of road crossings. "Rd X-ing Spotters" are valuable if there is a "blind" situation where the crossing guards have little/no warning when a race vehicle (or civilian) is approaching.

So there is explanation 2.0 :D

UPDATED ROSTER 1-13-09

As soon as I said we had everything covered...we had a couple people have to drop out....that is what I get for bragging. We could use more rovers...people with 4X4 are cool! We have some real soft/sandy conditions on the west side of the course...and that is the area we need the most rovers to keep an eye on the course. We need 12 rovers to do this right. Thanks everyone!
