I used the bilstein ones a few years ago and never had a problem, then switched to the Lemforders because thats what the cool kids run.

Hey,
Just wondering , would any of you have a problem with my car passing Tec if I was to weld 3/8 id tubing to my front arms to both sides of the ball joint opening and cut it in half like a half cap and then bolting the two pices around the ball joint eliminating the hammer or press ?

Has any one tried this ?

Is their any Quick Feild repair tools that are available but secret ?.. I have heard rumors but never seen the animal

Does any one Mill their stock ball joints for more travel ?

What else do you guys do ?

Thanks,
Mark

There was a guy who ran the MDR south series that did this and it held up. I like the idea of being able to fix it on the track but if your stops are set right and your prep is good you shouldnt have to worry about it. Not sure I would do that because it's another bolt that can brake or come loose. I think the standard way is just fine and if you ever have any questions please feel free to PM me.

Some guys spend the time to open up the cups to get that little extra (like all guys want) but it takes more time and not sure if it's worth it. Hope this helps

I run the Lemforders also. I always double nut them and drill them and put a cotter pin just for extra security. If the front end is set up right and the stops are solid no trouble at all.

1) Ball joint tools to pop the BJ's off the spindle can be found on "TheSamba.com", it's easier to run w/o a front corner than drag a flopping wheel but never, never tear off a rear corner, they don't like that ;)...

2) Why, how much more travel do you really need get???

3) Double nut and lock-tite the BJ's. Use stock VW washers and weld the concentricts in!!!

The Samba . com is great

There are some aftermarket spindels with chromoly stubs also increasing the ground clearence by 3 1/2 inches for $250 a pair, sounds fair.

Would you get DQed for running these ?

YES. the first thing you need to do is get a rule book.

You are right I do need a new rule book... last one had a picture of a frog on it ... but it sounds like not much has evolved since then

Straight from the rulebook:

Front Suspension

Front suspension must be VW type 1 ball joint. Front axle torsion tube centers may be cut, rotated, rewelded to increase ground clearance. Original seems may be welded (not reinforced) on front beam. No additional material may be added. Torsion adjusters allowed.

Filling of the speedometer hole in spindle is permitted. Steering arm on spindle may be reinforced by welding a 0.025 gusset from the top of the upper ball joint mount to the end of the steering arm.

A single tube may be welded from one shock tower to the other as a reinforcement

Suspension limiters allowed.

And that is all there is. In another section is states you can use steering dampeners and no power steering is allowed.
