Ok I am new to the Toyota's. I have gotten rid of all my Fords and now have two Toyota's in my driveway. A 87 4runner(family cruiser) and a 88 2wd pickup(desert toy). So the pickup is getting linked around early February time and I am debating on what tire size to run. Are 35x12.50 too much tire for a 22r? I am was going to run them with 5.29 gears and a locker. The reason for thinking of running 35's are because I have six BFG A/T sitting at my house in that size.

22Rs have a butt load of torque because of the long stroke. As long as you back it up with good gears you are in good shape. I ran 33 12.15s for years with stock 4.10 gearing. 5.29s are pretty much mandatory for 35s.

Yea I got 5.29's from the rock crawler guys. Also what can you do about fixing the the speedo to read correct?

I'm not sure about the speedo thing. I had mine calibrated once and just did some adding and subtracting. When my speedometer says I am going 55 I am actually doing 67.

Use the GPS for the speedo.

Although 5.29's are numericly correct for 35's, there are other drains on the power besides just the change in size. The increase in wind resistance is huge compared to stock tires and if you are going to run longer arms, thay'll make it that much worse. Also, the rolling resistance of the bigger tire is of course more as well as the inertia of the bigger tire. It takes more grunt just to turn them.

I ran a 22re with 33's for many years and often wanted to go to 35's but living as far from the dez as I do, it would make the drive down just that much more miserable.

Good luck w/ project!

Well it would be towed out to the desert when I go. The only real reason for keeping it street registered is so I can take it on the street here and there.

I understand. Just some things to consider. Acceleration will still suufer eve w/ 5.29's.

Yea that's why I was asking for some of you guys experience. Helton suggested 6.33 gears on dezertrangers and I think that is going to be the way I go.

We ran our race truck with the 22r and 33x10.50's for years. We were also putting it through a 9" which was taking some power as well. The 2wd trannys are geared higher than the 4wd trannys so we were running it with 5.43 gears and it ran pretty good. We switched to the 2.7ltr 4 cyl and the torque difference is out of this world!!

Here are a couple of video's with the 22r, 2wd tranny, and Ford 9" with 5.43 gears.

I run 5.29's with a spool and have 33x10.5 Baja TA's and it is great. I had 4.10's before and I thought it was dog. Maybe 4.88 if it is street legal and 5.29's if it is offroad only. My toyota isn't street legal so I went with 5.29's. The Baja TA's are a little heavier as well compared to the AT or MT's.

I have 33x10.5x15's on my modified 22re with 4.56's. The speedo is spot on, but the truck is slower due to the massive increase in rotational inertia. I go through trannys more frequently as well, due to the increase in the loading and unloading force. I wouldn't run 35's unless you were running a different drive train
