Ok so I bought a ranger from a friend (Buff) and he put a explorer 5.0 crate engine in it. I was wondering if any motor heads had advice for me to get some HP's out of it. I realize were not going to get 400 hp out of it but need some parts that will get as much HP without Big money. By the way it has a Culhane 400 behind it with 37 Projects.

we have a ranger with a 5.0 and we have a 5 inch intake, new mass air, a new cam, cobra intake manifold, and it gets plenty of power. get it dyno'd for even more hp

E OR X303 cam, Cobra intake. Ford parts are actually pretty good. If you can find some gt40 heads, you'll be in business of around 400hp.

It may already have gt40p heads on it.Do a 5 angle valve job on them with an edlebrock intake and 1 5/8headers and youi will get closer.

WHat headers are on it? The factory ones are about the worst things ever.

we run 35s with 4.80 and we only hit 92 on a highway full throttle.we run out of gear. we are are going to change to 456 or 415 for MDR California series and stay with 480 for superstition series because its much softer. might want to experiment with new gears.

Ditch it an put in an ls1 :D In the big picture if the ls1 fits it will be more power and less money.
When we ran the Lucas Oil Ranger we had the GT40 302. The only gear that would let us use all the 3rd gear was a 5:83. The truck was really fun with this gear. With a 5:13 it was a dog...
Hop up parts for the 5.0 = AFR heads, 327 stroker kit and a C&J carb. This is the only thing that MIGHT make you happy. Check out http://www.probeindustries.com/

Thanks for the info. I was going to put a bigger motor but I want to start with the 5.0 cause it came with it. Also I am a big guy so before I go changing things like motor I need to make sure I dont need a can opener to get out.
One of the things Buff wanted to do was design new steering. Anyone now how long the stock rack will last? Probably the wrong section for that question.....

Do the gears get weaker the bigger you go?

To a certain point yes, but at 523 range you are fine, especially for the power you're putting down.
