I am new to desert riding and would like advice on what type of car I should buy. It seems that a class 9 or ½ 1600 would be best for my budget. I probably will not race the car so if a vehicle won’t pass tech inspection it would be ok. Keep in mind that I have no experience. I used to race jet ski’s on the pro endurance schedule so to see the abuse you guys/gals take in these races is amazing. I would like to stay under $12k.
Here are some considerations
Long shocks to make it a somewhat comfortable ride.
2 seater
Decent power
Dependable
Any advice is greatly appreciated. This is an incredibly tight knit group of people..be proud.

Class 9 and Class 1600 are both fun and competive racing. However, if you want a cush ride and you don't plan on racing then I suggest you stay away from torsion bars. 9 out of 10 back surgeons recommend coilovers versus torsion bars. You should be able to pick up an older desert coilover car in your price range. It would be good for cruising and getting seat time plus you could keep it as a prerunner if you ever decide to step up and get a competitive Class 9 or Class 1600 racer.
If you're determined to get a Class 9 or Class 1600, then you can find competitive Class 9 cars for under $12k (such as Kevin's) but competitive 1600 cars are in the $20k-$30k range. I have a 2-seat 9 car and a 2-seat 1600 car for sale. PM me if interested.

Thank you for the reply's....very helpful. Please send me pic's and pricing.
Understanding that a coil over is more comfortable ride, what do you think of the sand rail in the link below?

I always look at race cars like real estate in the sense that the more you can offer at the time of the sale the less you will lose.9 cars always seem to sell espcially 2 seaters.REIDS car has the best parts and has been pro prep'd/maintained.I do agree with scott about torsion bars...but for the price I don't think you can find a decent built play car. There are some good deals out there I would look for "good" parts on them like, foddril, saco, woods, fox, king and a well built trans and motor. The plus of buying a race car is that most are torn down after every event and rebuilt/replaced
here lets put them next to each other
Reids car/////////////////////////////////play car
1.2 seat....always in demand/////////1.also a 2 seat
2.full race drivetrain///////////////////2.honda motor trans both stock ?watr pumpr
3.full race saftey features/////////////3.it does have a 4 pt harness
4.full body////////////// ////////////////4.has a wing
5.full race suspension/steering parts///5.doesn't appear to
6.front brakes/////////////////////////// 6.no,but has disk in the rear
7.wired for intercom/radio///////////////7.does not list it
8.spares(parts)big bonus/////////////// 8.has dirt tires too
9.its a winner!works great in the dirt///9.not sure if the ride would be any better
10.Corey Torres touched it/////////////10.I've heard he does get around
