As I was packing tools from my garage box today to pit this weekend I was thinking I really need to get a pit box together of tools needed while at outlying pits. Something you can put together for fairly cheap and have it sitting in your garage you can grab quickly and it is always ready to go ready to go. Maybe a mix or harbor fright and craftsman tools to pit for the buggy classes to cover most situations that would happen.

What wrenches ,sockets, hammers and specialty tools. What is some common hardware that might be needed?

I guess what I am saying is help me help you.

Zip ties, couple pieces of scrap steel if your gonna weld, crowbar or something similar for prying and bending. Plenty of towels (shop or white). Safety Wire too.

Best deal: Buy the $99 Cresent tool kit from Costco. It has just about everything you need. Add specialty tools and whatever spares you have or need. Generally it is, filters, nuts bolts, electrical connectors, Meter, safety wire, zip ties, and duct tape. Also always have oil, tranny fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, carb cleaner, starting fluid, grease, and a grease gun handy. I always end up bringing too much stuff as I expect the worst. Better to be prepared then to have to wait around for someone to bring what you forgot.

Oops! didn't notice this was in the class 9 forum. But it should still be relevant.

Jeff, keep track of the tools and misc. it takes to prep your car and make sure that you have a couple of sets or as many sets as you want to send out.
when we had issues this week, we had at least one of everything to properly diagnose our problem, that kind of stock takes awhile to figure out.

Jeff, come see me next week and I will give you a copy of our checklist for our pit boxes. It's pretty universal for most cars and includes most everything except for tools. generic tools are in another box.

Pickle Fork!!

Also, When I replace something on the car that is still usuable I will set it aside into the spare parts box.

It is a learning experience of what to carry...The first time I broke a spindle, I had a spindle, but no spindle nut, washer etc....fortunatly I found the broken end of the spidle and the associated parts.

After working on a 9er for the first time during a race last weekend I can tell you how important it is for you guys to have something to change a Ball joint is. None of us at the Pit had ever done one but luckily had what we needed. It helped that the car had the parts on board to do it the easy way. 6 or 7 minutes and a couple rookies had it changed. I am sure all you 9ers already knew what you needed but I sure didn't.

Shred - I will try to find you at Parker. Look for the FAIR Main Pit

We carry two full set's of front trailing arms , with stops , and ball joints already in place. Keep 1 set @ main , and 1 set in the chase vehicle , or @ a remote pit , and a nice long prybar. its also a good idea to have some extra nuts and alignment accentrics. I keep an extra alt. pulley ,shims, a nut , and a belt on board . I always have a hard time planning for breakage, because when the car is fully prepped, and ready to race ,it looks BULLETPROOF, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN . I heard alot of good ideas!! RACE ON !!!
