Kyle did an awesome job Saturday and stayed right up with the pack for the first lap, but at the start/finish line when he came in to start his 2nd lap, the motor died and wouldn't fire up again. Turns out the motor was getting flooded. After a few speculations we changed what we thought was the problem (the float valve in the carb), but low and behold Sunday rolls around and we're still getting flooded. So for Sundays race we had to plug the high speed jet to try and manage the fuel...ended up really killing not only the bottom end but lost all of our top end too. Stalled a few times during the race and had to really do some clutch work to keep the car moving. What eventually took us out was running out of fuel mid 3rd lap. 7.5 gallons of fuel in 30 miles. YIKES

First answer.. I dont know.. 2nd answer is that I will get with the MORE guys and get a commit on the post race inspection items..
My intent and assumption has been all along is whatever MORE does now for rules and tech is the deal. Same with the winnings split.
If the race had gone SNORE-DRIVE-CODE would have been the same deal.. the race location orginization rules and tech.

From MORE via email
Tell them the first 3 cars in class will have the Carb checked rocker arm remove and engine will be P & G for compression, and the Trans will be check for First and Second standard gears and size of ring gear. Cars will be put on scale at post tech.
The rules are the same for all organzation.
send me some ideas you have for a tighter tech that is reasonable..Dave

It is my understanding that all the south racers run to current SCORE rules....as it should be.It is just a couple of high dezert guys and a vegas 9 guy who want to rewrite some rules:D

A few ideas you might want to consider from a reformed swinger:
1) The scales will not be correct if they are not level and on a flat hard surface (bring sheets of plywood), dirt does not really work per numerous scale mfr's. I'd also suggest that you may want to make arrangements to have the scales available at tech so those that have never done so have a chance to weigh their cars. I know one young swinger who ended up at a Wal Mart and we hose clamped in 40 lbs the night before a Ridgecrest race, prior to that tech he assumed he was legal...
2) Make sure all the cars weighed are empty of: Fuel, tools, jacks and spares and I suggest you all agree to look and confirm this prior to the cars going on the scale and maybe agree to have the weights be open knowledge to all competitors that will be checked. Twice last year cars went on the scales but were never checked to be empty of fuel by the inspectors and one was weighed with tools and the jack in it. Fair is fair...
3) When pumping out the cells the fuel color should be looked at, I'm just say'n...
4) Decide before the race if you'll as a group will allow any non conforming parts such as wheels, tires, +1" cars, how to measure wheel base, non conforming carbs, and certain offshore hair care proddy. Then approach MORE with these decisions, it'll nullify any butt hurting at the event...
5) Make sure there is sufficient lighting at post tech, there is never enough...

March 6th, 2009, 09:41
Ringleader, I completely agree. 1) We should get scales as level as possible and on a hard surface. 2) Weighed to SCORE rules! Spares tools ect... NO! 3) Colored fuel??? Pump gas should be clear or pinkish. 4)+1" NO! rules say 100". 5) Ill talk to Mr. Tony Murry and ask if he would donate a light for 9 car tech as he owns American rentals.... a big tent would also be cool Tony! 6) P&G only gives you swept volume, not compression ratio. Heads need to be pulled and should be, to be correct. 7) check trannies.

Art has a sonic compression tester. No need to pull a head unless you want to check for chamber shapes....Just an FYI....

I totally agree with the scales--you will never get a accurate read in the dirt even with plywood as any flex changes the scales--sorry but scaling cars has been a vital part of my job (on road open wheel cars ) and as such I used to set up our scales every weekend-
But they will have to be------- so after they are set up we should as a group check a couple cars--pre race at the location--to see how close they are--
if we get a tent light etc, maybe we could get a small area graded flat--someone out in Lucerne or Yucca with a tractor??
would really help--
and I really think if there are 30- 50 cars the top 5 should be teched------
or any number that are being paid back
of course we are all gentleman and dont cheat--------------

Having an ex driver do tech is asking for trouble. I don’t know how rough class 9 tech is but in my circle track days having an official who knows certain people and not others is going to cause a major stink.

This stuff is new to me so gonna ask opinions..
Should I ask to let the top 3-5 finishers see each the weights of all cars? and what happens if one says no?
If anyone is using ballast to make weight.. is it documented with a seal number? should it be to confirm it wasnt removed for a few laps before the finish?

As far as weight; I know that none of the cars I've seen or raced that had added ballast have ever had a seal affixed to the weight. I was beat once by a car that in post tech was "LIGHT" so the allowed him to throw ona spare--even though no spare could be mounted cause there wasnt a provision for it--then fill his tank and he was still 3 lbs light---
go figure---
then they made me tear my entire motor down--which was legal--

I see Larry all of the time and he still is doing well I recently raced against a team that he put together for a charity go-cart event, He is an awesome person and an icon to the sport. His grandson Josh is building a class 8 right now, it should be one heck of a creation, hopefully Larry will be back in the desert to help him out.

I think Frank's worried about the rules being enforced and post-tech'd properly.
I think top 3 should get a solid post-tech with the rest in the money getting some sort of inspection.

Can you post them up again for me or email me
gitigowland@sbcglobal.net
So if we go 6x75 or 450 miles there is no way unless you run PERFECT that we are going to finish in 12 hours-thats a 2 hour average MAXIMUM
--maybe we suggest a 14 hour time limit??
I dont want to shorten the distance--too bad we couldnt have just had a 9 car race--like the PRO 1600 race every year and not had to "share" the track with anyone---oh well
I am planning on 6 x 1:50.00 laps so I will be ok---LOL
but seriously---we should talk about this--
cause you have to finish in the time limit to be a "OFFICAL" finisher-------------------

Either MORE raises it to 13 or 14 hours or I think we drop it to 5 laps.
Right now it's 6 laps x 66 miles = 396. After the course change it would be either 6 x 74 = 444 miles or 5 x 74 = 370 miles
444 miles @ 40mph average is 11 hours and 6 minutes. 444 miles @ 37 mph is 12 hours exactly. Looking at the results from last year, only the winner averaged over 37mph.

I was thinking that if the race was shorter would might have some more entries. You figure 34 entries with most using at least two and sometimes three racers...that's 68 to 102 racers! That and the fact that this is a big race for 1/2 1600...we saw a few of those guys get class 9 rides for the last big race.
Hopefully we'll get at least 6 more to show up.

High octane fumes fill my nose as I take a deep breath from the air pumped into my helmet. Check the gauges. Temps are fine. The tach surges…truck torques with every rev. Dust lingers as the competitor in front of me dwindles away. I roll towards the start line….30 seconds…breathe. I wiggle my fingers. Gripping the steering wheel in one hand, I slam the tinted visor closed with my other, eyes glued to the starting light. “Here we go guys!” I scream, pushing the radio button. My voice vibrates in my helmet. Sweat soaks my skin. Silence. Hot. Dizzy….breathe. Everything seems slow. The light turns green…
With a rush of reality, like coming out of a bad dream, I’m pressed against the seat as I mash the gas. All I can see is the light blue sky over the fiberglass hood. Time pauses again. Bliss. With needle point accuracy the bubble explodes. ROAR. VIBRATION. The rear tires dig. The truck surges, as if I’ve been rear ended….second gear…I crack a smile.

It was a very tight time limit. After our 2 broken spring plates we were only able to get 4 laps completed.
BTW Thank you Frank for hooking me up. I will PM you in the morning so I can get those plates returned to you.

I just ran out of talent. It was a 4th gear downhill section then a few whoops. It went up on the left wheels then went over a couple times, not sure how many. I should have rolled once earlier and not there so I guess it works both ways. Bent an axle and a few things in the front end.
Thanks for looking for the thumbs up; those doors come in handy when climbing out of the car.
I heard I wasn't the only class 9 who went over a few times. Any other stories?

The 911 car had a great fun race. Got a little shook up when the car began to run really bad at mile three off the start. Limped along to mile 11 were the ACME pit heard my car popping bad & waved me in and fixed me up. A plug wire had pulled off.
Hats off to ACME for helping me out it was very cool. Got rolling again and up to speed.. had two flats on lap 4 and on the final lap 2nd gear went away. Made it to the finish under the time limit.
My friends Paul Eddy and Ron Thomas drove the race with me and got us up to the front and did a fantastic job.
Thank you to Ryan Schank for the hard work of fixing what I tore up last race and for aother great set up and trans on the car for the "Big Race" .. that race seat felt just fine and stayed dry!
Thanks to my team (my wife Maria, Mark Pickering, Derek Clark, Paul Eddy, Ron Thomas and Ryan Schank) all who made this race special for me with a great finish.

Congrats to everyone that went and took part in Dave Bolles
"BIG RACE".
Without Dave this would not have happened---------
We had a good race for a bunch of old men.
Our only problem was a steering knuckle that was loose and short of welding it was going to stay that way, and a bad upper front end bushing. We stopped on all but one lap to check it, making sure it didnt get any worse. driving with 4-5 inches of play in the steering wheel was a bit unnerving, if it had let go it would have been a certain rollover, and a destroyed car.
I want to thank Rick Poole again for allowing me to use his car. For a car that is 23 years old, this baby is dialed. The fastest nine car I have ever driven, thanks to Doug Perault's masterful talents as a engine builder ! Doug came out to tune and check the motor and do the teardown in the post tech, THANK YOU DOUG !!!
If you need a good motor get ahold of DOUG PERAULT.
We could have had some better lights, I was over driving them pretty much everywhere in the back section, I was wishing I had had my 5 HID HELLAS on board but not making any excuses for my driving. I drove 85 percent, with a finish in mind, but other than that, and a seat belt adjuster that dug a two inch wide cut in my side it was an awesome race. We could replace the coupler, and the bushing and do another event right now, thats how tight the car is. This is one sweet ride.
Congrats to the Lang team on a consistent race and the win.
and to Dave Bolles team for second.
I told everyone it was going to be that way, a consistent racer would win, not a super fast one.
It seperates the men from the boys when you have to think about the drive as well as go fast. Twelve hours was tight but do able. We logged 23 minutes in the pits. That was our down fall.
Until next time-------------------------Giti

It was a really great race! It was awesome to be doing battle over 30 cars! Steve, Dave, Giti and Steve(I don't remember who else completed all six laps)...Congrats! The time limit didn't exactly allow for much downtime.
As for us, the first 58 miles was awesome! So much racing going on all over the place. I will say that there was a 1450 truck that was really getting on my nerves around mm33-35! We were having a good run, the car felt great my Co-driver Bryan Grigsby was incredible. Especially considering that it was his first time in a swinger. WE were running exactly how we had planned...just trying to make a good consistant pace. Then Disaster struck about mm 58. The car started handling very poorly, kinda like the right rear shock had blown out. We drove the car 5 miles to our pit to find out that the right rear spring plate had bent and looked a little like an "s" shape. We had no spares and Frank Wagner was kind enough to let me borrow 2. After getting it changed out Bryan and I leave again and everyuthing was great. We The car felt awesome. Thank you to my Dad for a nice eyeball on the setup! We were back running great all through lap 2 and MOST of 3 we had even been catching some of the other 9's again, until mm 52 when......the left spring plate broke:mad: This time there was no driving the car out. But our chase crew got all the stuff togethor and brought us everything we needed to get the car going. At this point we had enough time to make 1 make 1 more lap but were concerned about damaging soething else going wrong. I decided to limp the car around to S/F and at least get points for 3 laps but the car felt good enough to continue as planned so I pulled into our main pit to turn the car over to my Dad and Greg Ferruzo. They had a great lap and were able to pull the car into s/f to complete the 4th lap within the time limit.
All in all it was a great race. I am glad that we never gave up and at least get some points out of it.
I have got to say a huge THANK YOU to the entire Kaveman Motorsports team. My Mom, My wife who did a great job dealing with our poor radio communication, Tony and Victor Rojo for their mad chase skills (sorry about your shock mounts), Brian Beeler who has been so awesome all season long for us, his family for helping us, Justin, David and the other one (sorry I forgot your name!) for helping us out (I will get you your shirts, too!), Vlad and Susan....great job especially because it was your first off-road race ever, hope the experience was good! Lyndsy, thank you for letting Bryan Co-drive with me, he was awesome! The Wood 965 Team for supporting us.Thank you to FRANK WAGNER for the use of your spring plates! And thank to all I may have forgotten.
I also have to say THANK YOU to TRAILGLOW LIGHTING for your support! Thge new lights were incredible.....seeing was definatley not an issue! And the number panels made us look cool too! Too bad we had to use the flash function:mad: The pit sign was easy to see since it lite up and my pit crew was easy to see with their vests on. THANK YOU Paul and Paul Jr. for everything.
Thanks to all the swingers for showing up and making this a great event!

WOW what can I say, congrats Steve Lang on the win and congrats to everyone that was able to finish. I had a very eventful day I am sure many of you saw the skidplate of my car at mile 33 on lap 1 Damn Washouts. (Thanks Dave for making sure I was OK) luckily I was able to get the car turned over by myself and continued on. On the second lap I had a rear shock blow the top of the reservoir off and had to limp for 40 miles not to mention that because of my new BARN BURNER engine ran so good it threw off my fuel strategy and I ran out at mile 40. I got back to main pit after waiting for a while for my chase man to get fuel out to me and because of the roll my front drivers side tire was cambered in so we changed the arms rebuilt my rear shock and kicked it into high gear for lap 3 and ran a 1 hour 36 minute lap time by our clock (minus the pit stop) with only 2 lights, no disrespect Kyle/Jacob you guys did an awesome job, I knew you would love the new trans I just want to showoff my crews skills because they worked their butts off. Anyway laps 3 and 4 were flawless and I let my back up driver John Ward get in to run laps 5 and 6, he too did an awesome job getting the car back to the finish in a very quick time, sadly we were un-able to start the last lap. I have to hand it to my crew they all did an amazing job getting me back out on the course and I was so happy to almost get back into the top 10, after a day like that I feel great and to be there at the end is almost like a win in itself. Thanks Dave Bolles for organizing this event and thanks to all who showed up, it wouldn't have been the same without you, also thanks MORE for putting up with all of us racers and giving us a place to race. I believe they ran out at about mile 49 on lap 2. It sucks waiting in the pit with your race gear on ready for the driver change and seeing all the cars they were ahead of the lap before going by and wondering what the F is up...

Laps only count from scoring loop to scoring loop. They begin at S/F and end there. Not ck 3 to ck 3. If we had given a fast lap award thats how they would have awarded it--------
you had a 1:48.

I'm writing the story. I got a race report from Giti but have not heard from anyone else. If you have a report send it to me. I will make sure you are informed when it hits the newsstand. :)
