Which one do you use when you have a manual transmission? or am i tottaly confused and they are one in the same? I thought flex plate is for manual trans and fly wheel is for auto. I need which ever for my engine. the engine builder said he needed it to balance the engine

Flywheel has a surface for the clutch disk engage on and has the pressure plate bolted to it;
It acts as a rotating mass to smooth and maintain crank rotation. Flex Plate is what you would bolt a Torque Converter to. The Torque Converter is also the rotating mass that takes the place of the flywheel weight.
