I wonder how fast a shifter kart can do pikes peak? All you have to add is a small wing on the fronat and back and some type of custom made dirt tire!

I wish Rod Millen would bring the Toyota Tacoma back to Pikes Peak and take a shot at the record. That is an awesome car. I have an old VHS video with ESPN coverage of Pikes Peak when they installed a camera just above the front splitter of Rod's car. Just wish I had a way to copy it onto the computer.

Those pictures of Garden of the Gods at the 20 second mark are just down the street from where I grew up.
Last year we where at the right hander at the 5:40 mark in that video. I might be in the shot but can't find me.

I have been going for years. Unfortunately in this economy I have to move to Albuquerque next weekend for work so I probably won't make it this year. The quads are cool because they start in packs and not single file.

Last year after Rhys run they interviewed him on the radio. He said the only reason his dad was not there was because of prior commitments. He also said his dad is trying to come back this year in the Celica. Rhys then said something like "If I could only get him to give me the Tacoma to make a run". The Celica and the Tacoma are both amazing to watch. Rod is still not listed as a competitor and Rhys is listed in a 2wheel drive class so it might not be happening.

The one and only time I was at Pikes Peak was in the summertime. It was close to 90 degrees in Colorado Springs when we started our trip up to the summit. When we reached the top it was in the mid 30's. Quite a shock when you jump out of the car wearing only shorts and a t-shirt.

I think Protrucks are running again this year, and what I have been told is that since the weather has been crappy the past winter, they cant work on paving it? Not sure how that really makes any difference as you would think they could pave it just about any time of the year, but that is what someone told me that the weather has been bad and is delaying the process....?

Sounds good! We will have to really let Blue know how good of a time it is up there, when he is in Phoenix in 115 degree weather! Hahahahahahaha

Hey Trent

I spoke with Michael this weekend, he is so excited. When are you going up? I will be in Telluride starting Sat 7/18 for a week. Hmm...

Mike Webber will be in Denver also. We may have to meet up at the race.

Are you going to let Michael borrow your incar camera? That would be awesome!

Best of luck to all!

Without a doubt devils playground is the best place to be IMO. It's just above the switchback section, so from Devil's playground you can see the field
climb the switchback.
The deal with Pikes is everything happens really early, all night before race day the spectators literally pour onto the mountain. So getting up to a good spot
has to happen at say 3:00am, but in the end everyone manages to find there place. Makes for a long day, but some killer memories. Oh camping out up there
is an option too, at least it has been in the past.

Looks like Marcus Gronholm will be racing a 800 hp Ford Fiesta in the unlimited class.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/DSRanger/090716_mg.jpg

Gronholm set for his Pikes Peak debut
Former World Rally Champion Marcus Gronholm is gearing up for his first attempt at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, USA, this Sunday (19 July).

Alongside co-driver Timo Alanne, Gronholm, 41, will drive a supercharged, four-wheel drive, 800 horsepower Ford Fiesta prepared by the Swedish Rallycross team Olsberg Motor Sport Evolution.

A second Olsberg car will be driven by the team’s owner and four-time Swedish rally champion Andreas Eriksson, 35, and his co-driver Per Ola Svensson. Together they will attempt to be the first team to break the 10-minute mark over the 12.4-mile, 156-turn asphalt and gravel course.

The existing record - 10min 01.41sec - was set in 2007 by former Suzuki World Rally Team boss, Nobuhiro ‘Monster’ Tajima driving a 3.6 litre twin turbo Suzuki XL-7. Tajima will be back again this year in his Suzuki Sport machine.

Q&A with Marcus Gronholm

Have you always wanted to participate in Pikes Peak?
“I have been following the event for many years and I had seen the video from the race in 1986, I think. Then the opportunity came because Andreas asked me if I would do it, and I immediately said, ‘Yes, I would like to try.’”

The high altitude is one of the biggest challenges of Pikes Peak (the finish line is at 14,110 ft), what other special challenges are attached with this event?
“I think it’s altitude, and to get the car working up to the top, that’s the big thing. There will be a bit of learning for us as well because we don’t know that much about Pikes Peak and the car is completely new. So we will see. I hope it will be a good challenge.”

What are your thoughts after testing the Fiesta?
"The power of the car is good and it feels really easy to handle. I would have liked to test it a little bit more, but, like always, we are running against time, so it was in the last minute and the car had to be sent to the U.S.”

How does the Fiesta drive compared to a WRC car?
“There’s much more power in this car, and that’s always nice. It’s nice to handle, but a little bit lacking in torque like the WRC cars have. They are quite easy on the torque but of course we have so much power, so it’s difficult to get it, to drive from the bottom, but otherwise it’s easy.”

Have you ever actually been up Pikes Peak?
"No, never. It will be my first time.”

What do you know about the course?
“Well, from Andreas I heard the road is really nice, wide and smooth. I’m really looking forward to making the trip to the States and to take good notes, then we can try it with a race car.

From what you know about Pikes Peak, what WRC stage would you compare it to?
“It’s really difficult to say, but I think it’s like New Zealand with the fast, nice, smooth wide roads. It hairpins a lot, too. I’m really looking forward to seeing the road.”

Eriksson went off course and flipped the car. Both he and Gronholm are using navigators for the race. They admit they are still learning the mountain so I don't think they will be a serious threat to make a sub 10 min. time. A British team has taken a Ford RS200 and prepped it for the hillclimb. Gotta love the old school Group B cars.

I will be arriving in C. Springs on Sat PM to get media pass and head to Mike Ryan's Barbeque --- he is the big rig racer from Hollwood, www.fastrucks.com. I will hang in the pits until 7am and then up to Devils. Maybe we can meet up there.

So I made pikes peak safely. Went to the top of the hill today 14100 feet! Got pictures of the ford fiesta and monster tajimas brand new car! Also saw some others as all the number one qualifiers were with there vehicles downtown tonight! First time being to Colorado and its beautiful reminds me of Alaska a lot! I will post pictures tomorow morning when I can use a real computer of some of the things from today. The buddy I am helping qualified 6th out of 13 in his class and is his first time racing pikes peak. He is on quad 626. I am unsure of where I am going to be watching race day but ill know tomorow night where they want me. Where's the bbq Doug? Or is it an invite thing? Off to bed. Either Dave mason or the 229 was the fastest pro truck qualifier and tajima was the fastest in the open unlimited. And I think rhys millen was fastest in the open 2wd class...

The rs200 had a time that impressed me but the most impressive race of the day had to have been the open wheel looking sprint cars with the top 3 within about 10 seconds of eachother if I remember right paul dallenback had a 10:58 I think! The semis both dnf one didn't start because of brake problems and the other blew a turbo just past the picnic grounds...

Nice video, thanks for posting it. The beginning of the video looks like a re-make of "Climb Dance."

They must have edited this part out,;)
