shock mount question

i'm building a stock fullsize and had a question about running a second shock
up front.rule book says shock placement is open so i was wondering if i could
mount a smooth body through the top of the spring bucket like the dodge guys...

How long does the shock inside the coil need to be? That coil moves around and I'm sure your axle/whatever travels in a slight arc... if the body sits to high above the coil bucket you will have clearance issues.

it's a land cruiser. looking to get a 11" smooth body that's 18.15" so
about 9" out of the top of the bucket. the front control arms are 30"
so the shock movement/angle change seems manageable....

You will probably have issues with a 2.5 shock when one side of the axle is fully compressed and the other droops... but you might be able to fit a 2.0.

Are you experiencing shock fade with that bypass?

If the rules allow for open placement of the shocks, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. I've seen numerous 7s trucks using up to 3" dia. shocks with the same set-up on both I-beam and A-arm suspensions. Some have the shock body passing completely through the spring mount, others only the shaft. I prefer the latter, less material to remove from the center of the mount and less chance of the spring rubbing against the shock body.

the bypass have never been run and that shock mount is from this trucks
previous life as a trail rig. it will get new shock mounts when the front is
caged. where i'm at now is i know i can fit the 2.5" not sure about anything
larger so i was thinking about running two shocks per corner up front. if
this is legal it may be the easiest if it's going to raise red flags i'll sell the
2.5"s (ouch) and try to figure out how to shoe horn a 3" in there....

What is your actual question? Are you asking whether you can cut a hole in the top of that spring bucket so the shaft can pass thru? If so, I'd bet you could ask ten people and five would say yes and five would say no. The real truth is that nobody cares what you do with that POS land cruiser because you are going to get stomped regardless.

why run the shock through the spring? why not just mount it in front or back of the spring?

space. i'm just trying to add more shock. i've got as big a bypass behind
the spring as i can fit, and between the panhard mounts and steering box
and linkage there is no room in front. if its a bad idea i'll play around
with tires and wheel offsets to try and get more shock behind the spring
the main reason for the thread was to see if this idea was the kind of
grey area in the rules that i might want to steer clear of...

my friend races kurt leducs old 7s ranger and since you cant have coil overs he put the shock through the coil like you said. the coil is a custom weight deaver i beam f150 spring and the shock is a 16" 3.0 king
