Mike, Fish, Dan, what RPM does the car begin to make decent boost? (3psi) what is the lowest RPM we will see under race conditions? I just talked to Chris at Continental Converter. (He’s the man!) He says we will save 8lbs on the crank. We want to set the stall… Will we be getting cams later? We will be removing the lockout and setting the stall. These things ain’t cheap. Plus, we need to run his stickers. Let me know ASAP… The N/A converter is 2500 and the Turbo is 2300 stock? Get me one of these ASAP. He’ll get me it back next day. I’ll text you my addy…

michael_loomis
September 28th, 2009, 16:02
you have it backwards... the stall on the turbo is 2500 and the NA is 2100...

it makes full boost around 3000.

michael_loomis
September 28th, 2009, 16:03
and we will need atleast one room for thursday night in "Midtown".. unless fish's homie has room. :)

fishd00d
September 28th, 2009, 16:04
She lives with a roommate I believe so they dont have room for us to stay there. On the way back San Antonio is the only big city that is kinda close to the drive home for Sunday night if we want....

michael_loomis
September 28th, 2009, 16:06
actually, just looked... Austin is about 2.5 to 3 hours West of Houston.. big party town..

FlyHiFlyLo
September 28th, 2009, 16:21
Not full boost, just boost... We are actually going to be dropping the stall to boost level. This will work real well on road courses and also help use the engine for decellerating (saves brakes). The valve body rework will speed the shifts up and the lower stall will keep the power down on the ground not allowing the turbo to free wheel so to speak. We are going to put some Rabestos blue clutch packs in the 2/3 planet.

Okay, so I have this trans deal pretty well handled. Raybestos racing blues, hardened and polished friction plates, new needle bearings all the hipo bands, converter, we are going to clean and chamfer all the fluid passages and do the triple-x thrown down on the valve body... Now who is going to bring the trans and converter up to me????? Steak and Lobster before you go home...Fish? Mike???

michael_loomis
September 28th, 2009, 20:00
Woo.. That's a long trip..

New pump is on.. Let me get a couple more things dialed in, and I'll pull the motor back out. This thing cranks for 15 secs before it even begins to fire.. Then it's really cold blooded.. Won't rev from idle till it's warm, then when warm it stumbles hard from a low rpm punch... Up top runs good.

Mafs?

FlyHiFlyLo
September 28th, 2009, 22:16

So this guy who is all crazy about our type motor sent me an email with a bunch of stuff about us racing but this is one suggestion he had:

"also grab a throttle body from a mid 90's 240sx with a 2.4 engine and ( CRUISE CONTROL ) only this model !!

its and extra 10 hp for a dollar or two.."

michael_loomis
September 29th, 2009, 11:57

#
# 3.12: Noise Limit: Our noise limit is 92dB @ 50 feet @ W.O.T. What that boils down to is no straight pipes allowed; please use at least one muffler or resonator. With these heaps, a single Cherry Bomb or Supertrapp is usually plenty.

Does the hood open from the cowell (like the old Zs) or the grill?

It flips back like a regular car. It is held up with part of a broken easy up and it weighs 4 million pounds. The hood also holds the kill switch.

Sounds like a plan, I guess we will stay Sunday night now also in Houston since Loomis is taking Tuesday off. There are a couple places by the track we can just crash at Thursday night when we get there, that does make more sense and that way we can get to the track nice and early Friday morn to get a good pit spot.

The 4n71b (4speed) and the 3n71b (3 speed) have the exact same ratios. They add the overdrive between the bellhousing and 3n71b. Proven to way beyond 500HP.

3sp automatic
RWD 3N71B = 2.458 1.458 1.000 -
4sp automatic
RWD L4N71B = 2.458 1.458 1.000 0.686 -

If you want to get crazy in the future we can eliminate the overdrive moduale and it will shorten the trans by about 6" I was looking at it today. Then move the engine back...LOL That would be some huge weight displacement.

FlyHiFlyLo

If you do we can swap the ring&pinion gear to your turbo posi and go from 3:54 to a 3:90 gear.

michael_loomis

245/45-17

not running the LSD. It's an open diff. LSD is better for drag racing, not for turning, according to my buddy at Group 5. They raced one of these cars in a full blown racing series. Handling went away when they went to LSD. put they open diff back in, added a larger sway bar, and problem was solved. Full power to ground exiting turns.

Well there are two types of LSD these came with from what I read. One is a viscous and the other is a clutch. A viscous is always locked and ther other is clutch. Clutch will let the car roll through the turn then back on power it locks.

Is the current diff cover a finned one?

FlyHiFlyLo
October 3rd, 2009, 07:11
At a redline of 6500rpm, with the tire size you have and a top speed of 110MPH, we need to get as close to a 4.56:1 rear gear as possible. Just going to a 3.90:1 ratio will be a 10% increase in useable powerband.

If Redline is 6000rpm than a 4:10 is best.

But the best setup with our budget would be 6000rpm Redline, 110 top speed and a 275/40/15 tire with a 3.90:1 ratio. This is optimum with a 3:90 gear in 3 gear. First gear would never be used over 30 mph, second and third would have way more power. Then run a 2300rpm stall. And we could lower the car 2 more inches.

However, no one makes that size tire so the next best (avalible) tire size would be a 245/45/16. And we would be leaving only 1.5% on the table with a 3.90.

It's 13 hours of bumper to bumper, door to door death and distruction. No matter what we do it's up to the racing gods if we finish or not... Start praying beaotch!

Lighter faster stronger + easier to drive = reliable

Haha.. It doesn't work that way.. You just press harder on the go fast pedal!

Were not ditching the 8 free wheels from our sponsor. Car excelerates well on 15s but doesn't turn as well. All we need to do is skin some stuff, and add a rear sway bar, and were in like flynt.

What about the the gear questions? Finned diff?

This stuff matters for the converter.

michael_loomis
October 3rd, 2009, 18:20
I'm in primm, just got my ass kicked by the Nevada desert, I couldn't tell ya.

Diff is not finned from memory, nor does it have any type of LSD.

15" wheels suck. We have twice as much contact patch with the 17s.

No RG style reinventing the wheel 2 weeks before a race! Lol

So Chris got the converter yesterday. He is replacing the bearing and brazing it up. No lock out. We have decided to take it down to 2000rpm stall. He said with this range and the power we have this will help two issues for road racing. Fuel Mileage and also engine braking. He said this will save our brakes by about 15-20%. Also, the comfort level and endurance will increase due to using less brakes. He said the bearing in there was looking pretty knarly. Might have found a future problem early. And he said we can always loosen it up if the stall in too low.

We need lower gears. Who makes a 4:56 R&P set?

fishd00d
October 7th, 2009, 11:15
Fly we dont need to change gears in the car lol. And engine breaking is not that great of an idea IMO, I dont like having that thing rev'd high.

LOL looks stock to me... Fish the lower stall will just open up 2nd gear lower and also 3rd. Don't worry bro... It works different than you think.

Worked on the car today. What did you guys do? Should be ready for pick up Wed.

Lucy yous gots some work to do.

The front core support is pretty cool... Mike you are going to trip how much more room you have in the engine compartment. We are mounting the batt in back for you. It required some fab work... Those f'n #8 screws were a joke! LOL I found the ignition control moduale... FML it was under the old batt mount. Poof! that's gone too. There is an easy 200 lbs off the car now. You are working on it till tues right? I wish we had 3 bills for a new driveshaft.

Have your gas card ready to go with us, so we can get the car to Houston.

The factory batt tray it was hiding under is gone.

You don't need a strut brace. Handled bro.

There is a lot of space to move some of the other crap under the hood backwards to the firewall now. If Fish spends some time with the whole wiring deal he could really clean it up under there. With the hood totally removable now it's a breeze.

GAME OVER?

Someone asked on the Lemons board about putting the cell in the passenger seat. This was the responce from Nick Pon:

"That said, per the rules, the fuel cell area needs to be isolated from the driver by a solid bulkhead, UNLESS it's a FIA-approved cell with an outer case and internal bladder. The FIA cell will probably be a simpler solution than the bulkhead in this case."
