So I was looking at the jalopnik clip on the race and Murille Martin was kinda picking on underground sorta here is aquote of it
"If that's not surprise enough for you, check out the Black Sheep Racing Nissan 300ZX, which has stayed alive long after almost all the other Zs have blown up and/or crashed and will start the day tomorrow in fifth place. Remember, out of the dozens of Zs that have raced in LeMons, the most successful placed 8th overall (and, yes, this is one of the two Nissan Zs that have placed 8th)."
here is a link to it http://jalopnik.com/5358189/day-one-in-the-books-rx+7-leads-monte-carlo-catching-up

I always thought it would be funny if he showed up undercover and raced. He would lap the whole field 19 times in an hour. Brakes would be on fire tho.

Yes Fly it's 5 lug. Stock bars are 22mm F/R. I'm told the stock rear from an 88-89 is 24mm.
Links and poly bushings would work, however we'd have to make them look old. Good ole undercoating and flat black for tech.

I just got back from maui and am already packing for an overnight trip to the Kingman Street Drags. We won last year. Gotta whoop up on some high fiving tuner kids in the bug and defend the title.
I will be back tomorrow night and do the research on hotels....
I am assuming we are gonna arrive on friday and need rooms friday and sat night. Are we bailing after the race on Sun or are we staying Sun night too?
For the record... I am so Phuggin HAPPY that we are back in this MOFO!!!!! What a load of crap we ever even withdrew in the first place. The UNDERGROUND does not quit! Clicking the little "chicken icon" on the lemons site was the most painful thing i have ever done in my life. the damn site then asks you "Are you sure you want to withdraw The UNDERGROUND from this race?"
In order to make it official you literally have to click a box that say "BAAWKK".
It felt like getting punched in the stomach.
Like I said, I just got back in town and am bailing already. Gotta go win a race and when I get back tomorrow i will sort out Hotels, bars, strip clubs etc....
Fish whatever inside info ya got for selecting accommodations by a good dive bar and track proximity (in that order). would be helpful.

Well.. I'm thinkin we may need to leave Wednesday night after work, drive to Phoenix, pick up Dan, and continue on thru the night and try and get there thursday night. Its more fun, and less stress.
As far as leaving Sunday.. I dont want to.. but it might HAVE to be that way to make it to work on tuesday. lol
fishd00d
September 19th, 2009, 20:21
I agree 100% leaving Wednesday night. Sunday leaving sucks ass big time lol. At least if we can drive for a bit Sunday after the race and then crash somewhere for the rest of the night it makes it a little better. It is a SOLID 24 hours of drive time and that is with going pretty fast most of the way. Ill look at a map on Monday and look at some of the hotels I saw last time that looked nice. Also I have a girl friend who goes to school in Houston who is going to come out to the race, she also has friends (not sure on their looks but she is hot so I am sure they are) who are down to hang out fri/sat night around Houston!

That beotch is going under the knife. Gunna do a 3" channel on the rear suspension and a 3" strut tower drop on the front.
KITT is gunna be slammed to the G.

Good job... We can pull fenders once there is no double walls... ;)
If it's too crazy on the fenders we won't do the body drop...
fishd00d
September 21st, 2009, 13:15
Ya I dont think we need to lower it any. Thats not a problem with the car, it actually handles really well and like Loomis said stuff will rub if its much lower, its already got lowering springs.....the car just needs to stay on the track and we can win.

September 21st, 2009, 13:38
Fish, if you think it handles good now.... The thing is going to lose 900lbs and basically be a tube chassis.
I just want to do my share of the work... You guys have done so much.
fishd00d
September 21st, 2009, 13:48
I agree Fly just the thing with Lemons is its WAY different than regular racing, it dosent matter how fast or how well your car handles, it needs to stay on the track 99% of the time. Look at the cars that were battling it out at the last race for example, a old school volvo with a big v8 and a honda prelude, They were not that fast at all but they stayed on the track the whole time. Right now the Z is plenty fast and capable it just needs to be reliable. Anything we work on should be making it so its reliable IMO, fast wont do much if its not reliable first.
Plus remember they do inspect the cars and if you show up with a majorly modified car they are going to give you penalty laps. Tube Chassis would count as majorly modified....
FlyHiFlyLo
September 21st, 2009, 14:13
It will be subtle. The core deal is removing all the crap from the front end to let the radiator breath, Extend the cage to the front to support the strut towers and add slotted camber plates so we can add some camber. Also bringing the cage forward will support a tube bumper behind the plastic bumper. As a result of removing the 5mph crap. Skin the hood and take some major chunks out of the K-member. This will take almost 300lbs off the front end static.
In the rear it was discussed about the oversteer condition. We can fix this (what will be even more amplified with the new front end work) by first removing the fuel from the very rear and placing where the passenger seat was located. also we will remove the 5mph bumper and tie it into the rear cage with a single tube bumper located behind the stock plastic. There will be tons of materials we can trim that had a purpose of impact restsance and supporting the fuel tank. Also out back, we can skin the deck lid window frames and all double wall construction from the wheel wells back.
Mid chassis we can cut all the roof webing around the T-Tops, B-pilar. Additionally the doors can be welded shut and ground smoot with the door shell and door jams removed. We can re skin the interior with 22ga 6061 T6 whereever it might be considered 'too much"
As for the rest of the crap we should add an electric fan to the rad and mabe be able to stand it upright. New trans with non-loc converter will remove 20-30lbs off the crankshaft. Then we need to hook this bad boy up to god... And figure out the A/F mixture <- I think could be your reliability issue.
For handling we can replace all the bushings with poly and also box the front and rear lower control arms.
Remember this- The lighter the car; the better it handles, brakes, accellerates and reduces stress.
We don't want to hack this thing so bad it looks Highly modified... Just hide that it is.
We have a shop to do all this crap for 3 or 4 days so if you want in on the sparks FLY'n we can sure make a go of it.
All of these mods should make the car stay on the track an hour or so longer. :)

Thats all cool and a lot of it I agree with but we gotta remember we are going to be trying to race this car in the Chumpcar series too and by doing a lot of that stuff there is no way they will let us in without penalty laps. Its Loomis's car so whatever he wants to have ya do I guess is cool. I just would like to get the motor so we can feel confident in it and reliable.

I don't think welding the doors shut will FLY though! :) and I mean that literally lol. Too low of a roof line, especially with the cage.

I know how to get in and out of welded doors... However, the car looks like that ryno in Pet Detective. We'll check it out.
The thing is, so much weight is consolidated in the door structures. That weight is also located on the outside. The CG ratio changes drastically from outside to center real easy with the doors addressed.

I say we strip down the doors but still have them open. You bigger guys will never fit into that car if you weld the doors shut plus it makes it easier for working on the car to be able to open the door.

HKS Turbo controller on the way.
Should we get the bushings?
Rear Sway Bar... I've been scopeing out the rear suspension and when we tie the rear bumper in and remove the tank we should be able to use a 78ish 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 front sway bar. These are about 30mm and could be considered junk yard tech so we will get kudos rather than penalties.
Welding doors is not a few pounds. It's well over 100, because the jams, hinges, side impact and lock mech are the lyons share of weight. This will allow additional tube(s) to connect the lower front half to the lower rear half of the suspension together. Once you have this the body becomes merly cosmetic and your chassis is very rigid.
michael_loomis
September 22nd, 2009, 10:11
Im down with the doors if its feasible. If you have any body tools, Im sure we could remove some material at the top of the door skin, and shorten the height of the door, making it easier to get in/out.
Any kind of home built sway bar setup would be cool.. thats why I was thinking about using an adjustable VW beam in the rear, mounted above the floor, with links running down to the trailing arms. :)

HOLY CRAP!!!! KITT is gettin fancy!!!
The best part of KITT not getting respect is exactly that. Being underrated is a good thing. I have the utmost confidence that the UNDERGROUND is gonna win Lemons. The judges have repeatedly told us that they like us and love the fact we bring a car they consider to be the "great heart breaker" of the lemons series. Their misconception that our car is consistently hopeless has given us an edge and we we finally take home the first place trophy it will make our win that much sweeter. Every entry essay I have written has included the fact that we very much intend to win this and do it in the mighty 300ZX.
They are gonna eat crow.
I am voting against welding the doors closed also and am totally in favor of any ghetto mods that shave weight (which will prolly help the bakes last longer and lessen the overall wear and tear on the Z).
As far as the performance mods go, just make sure they are sneaky.

I still say having the doors open is a big help for working on the car. Trust me it will SUCK to work on anything inside the car without the doors being able to open. On a desert truck you can take panels off to work on stuff. I also vote no for welding the doors.

I dunno. Not likely though. I think it was just not shut all the way when I went out on the track. It was also unlocked. Never happened again and I am careful to make sure it is locked before we send it back on the track. The door flying open is a non issue anymore.

There wiring harnesses and relays etc stashed everywhere.
Fly, this thing has a detonation sensor that retards the timing. The fuel pressure reg is vacuum controlled. The slightest change in vacuum or boost changes the fuel pressure. I just noticed, as I put the manifold back on, that the 1" npt boost relief valve, was loose and not even hand tight. Im not taking any chances... I'm taking that pos out and putting a manual FPR in. Also an A/F gauge like Tony and I talked about. Gonna test run in an hour.

ok.. so I have test fired the motor.
Good news: It runs!!
Bad news: Intermittantly.
Fuel Pressure good. Spark good. most the time it will only try to fire for the first second, then crank uselessly. when it does run, it fires right up instantly, but if you touch the throttle at all, it dies. hmm.

When Nissan did the injector recall.. they made all the injectors fire at the same time off of cyl 3 and 4's signal... everyone says wiring them back to stock is a must. So I did that when put it back together.
At button willow, we had an intermittant problem with idle... it wouldnt at all sometimes. I would unplug the idle control solenoid, and plug it back in, and it would be ok for a bit.. out racing it wasnt a prob.. just in the pit at idle.
now its kind of the opposite lol

Well lets see>
Fly: Drives the LA freeways and his car's data shows an average speed of 50 it's whole life. 80-85 MPH everywhere with a cig in one hand and a Blackberry in the other. Grew up on country roads. I can wheel all day and keep it clean.
Mitch: First car was a Shelby GT 350, Now drives daily one of two Mercedes v-12 one EFI with 550HP Other Twin Turbo 750HP. Not scared to get in a POS with 250HP.
Nick: 30 years old, done some karting, understands apex dynamics and just showed me on bike Video of him doing 180MPH on his new street bike.
George: Poorsh luver from Bevery Hills 90210 and is currently building a 911 racecar.
We'll be okay.

fishd00d
September 25th, 2009, 09:05
Uh ya driving for an hour or so each = no win. Fly if you want to win it needs to be 5 drivers doing FULL fuel loads each which is about 3 hours. Thats the ONLY way to win and Loomis and Dan will back me up on that one lol.
fishd00d
September 25th, 2009, 09:08
Also this race the pitting is pretty awesome because they have hot pits!! So its just like Nascar where you pull down pit lane and everyone has a spot next to the wall, the only thing that kinda sucks is that if you need to work on the car with a lot of tools you gotta drive it back to your pit because you basically just have fuel at the wall. But it makes it fast for doing driver change/fuel ups!
pdailey
September 25th, 2009, 09:12
You guys are crazy!! Less stops are better. I say we put a fuel cell in later and do 5 hour stints!!
fishd00d
September 25th, 2009, 09:17
The colder races it will be a lot easier to go longer. This race I assume will be pretty nice weather and shouldnt be to hot or to cold so we can easily go 3 hours, at least me and Loomis can. Not sure what those other guys are gonna be like though if they arent used to it.
Also did anyone read if they are doing the FULL track or the same one they did earlier this year? If its the shorter one there will be a TON of traffic because its not that long of a course so the stints in the car are a little tougher since your working it pretty much the whole time.
FlyHiFlyLo
September 25th, 2009, 09:46
The first day we sit out one or two guys. Then on Sunday we can just run 4 guys?
FlyHiFlyLo
September 25th, 2009, 09:50
We can run the race pits backwards on the first day? Short pit first driver after 1.5 hours... Two full fuel runs with two drivers then last driver brings it home with 1/2 fuel load. Day two same thing yesterday's last driver for 1/2 fuel load then the three final drivers?
michael_loomis
September 25th, 2009, 09:57
Sunday is only 6 hours. Our normal plan is 3 drivers Saturday, and 2 on Sunday.
fishd00d
September 25th, 2009, 09:59
Well on Saturday it goes from 11:30-6. So thats 6 1/2 hours. We SHOULD be able to do that on 2 tanks meaning only 2 people drive that day. Then Sunday it goes from 9:15-4:15, which is 7 hours. Meaning we can do that on 3 pit stops with 2 drivers doing full fuel loads and the last driver doing less. So that would be 5 stops total and 5 drivers total. Thats the way to win, more stops = less time on track and cars that dont stop will gain 3-4 laps on us per stop at least.
fishd00d
September 25th, 2009, 10:02
The big question is Fly can you and your buddies do 3 hour stints in the car? If not then we can do whatever because it wont matter and we might as well just go to have fun.

Either way.. Fly and his buddies will be suffering the wraith of the black flag. A LOT. LOL!!
Im not going to Texas to win.. I'm going to finish a GD race, and build some confidence in this POS car. A finish in the top 10 would be a huge victory for me.

Well Fish you bring up some valuable points with all the drivers... I guess your going to have to be relegated to pit crew. LOL
Dude, we ain't gunna win this thing. We have one guy (Mitch that is paying for this and the other guy George is his best buddy) let the millionaires ride around on Sat. They aren't even gunna Race (or probally be there) Sunday. because that is Mitch's wife's B-day. So if we have one or two more stops we can still attempt a finish and see where the chips fall... That reverse psycho crap ain't gunna work on me bro. We can win... You are F'n telling me with two extra stops we are doomed to leave the turn signals on this POS? Come on now, even if we stopped for some wine and crackers picnic style in the center of the track we should still be looking to cook some lemon ass while racing on the track. Chin up dood. I'll tell you what I will do. I will race last. If we are dominating and can't afford to spend 2.5 minutes in the pits I will not race. But your ass is cashing in all those Nikels and giving me 750 of it.

hahaha you are not racing last buddy!!! I will not let you pull that crap. Its cool we have a good shot at it we just gotta avoid the black flags. Doing a pit stop will cost us about 3-4 laps so we just have to drive faster to make up for it but we can do it! Just pound in those other guys heads that black flags = the devil!! Even if you put 2 tires in the dirt they will black flag you at Houston!! There is a lot of spotters at this track and its flat as can be and you can see all the way around the track so you cant get away with anything there. Clean race = top 10.

Fish is sick, I think he's just cranky. Lol.
All he is tryin to do is shed some insight thru experiance. We thought we could go kick ass with 6 GOOD RACERS our first race.. Boy did we eff that one up. Just as Fly wants to use his resources to help build the fastest lemon we can build (which I am extremely greatful for) , fish wants to use all the strategy we have learned to better our overall position.
No matter what, were not going to have the best pit strategy, so we'll work with it, and go have fun. Yes we need to focus on a reliable power plant, but a faster chassis means we don't have to push the motor so hard as well.
Bottomline.. Let's have fun! I'm still going for fast lap!!

Looks like the JWT mapping doesn't support the factory rework. I bet your "Stock" ECU had the ECU software updated at the dealer when the recall took place. In the past we have just tarped the car or stuck it in the enclosed. We leave it at the track. Noone messes with the UNDERGROUND!
RV's are prolly not gonna get any votes in favor. Hotel is better IMO. We have discussed the RV in the past. Noone was down for that.
What trailer are we gonna use? What are we towing it with? Diddy usually lets us take his enclosed. Pat what do ya say? Anyone try and mooch that off him yet? It will take a lot of gas to lug that big ol thing to Texas though, Maybe we should consider a flat bed...
And where is Mid town fish?

Enclosed would be awesome that way stuff can get locked up plus having the tools in it is priceless. The gas will be not much different if we are using my gramps HD, it will get 13-14MPG no matter what it tows.
Dont really have to worry about people messing with stuff at the track it was way chill earlier this year at Houston and people even said how no one will mess with anything.

That's how I have it boosted now at 8 psi.. Valve just like that from a local hardware store.
They didn't remap anything when they changed injectors.. And every Nissan forum everywhere says to return it to stock. I just returned it to stock prior to starting this motor. It leaned and blew with recall wiring, and not enough fuel pressure.
2 things are mandatory before we race. A/F gauge kit with wideband o2 and bung. (eBay $200), and a fuel pressure regulator (manually adjustable).
This thing runs good. It was super rich, burning my eyes, the I adjusted the MAF screw (hidden from factory, had to drill the housing to access screw). I just don't know where to set it without some sort of meter.
T4 is of now help. You can pull 15-18 out of a stock T3, but the stock injectors can't supply enough fuel at 260cc.

No, I havent driven it under load yet.. I need to get my gramps timing light. Like I said though.. once its timed, the rich/lean is all a twist of a rotary resistor. I leaned it out and my eyes stopped burning.. lol.. I just need to know where its at under load.. AND I need 50psi!!

Fly if your planning on moving the fuel tank and putting in a cell this race forget it. Thats a complete waste of $$$ and time. We would need to build a complete enclosure of it also since there has to be a firewall between you and the fuel tank. Plus something about having the gas tank sitting next to you at a lemons race does not sound like a good idea at all lol. The gas tank is fine where it is and especially if we are not running full fuel loads its not a big deal at all.

Point this at the exhaust manifold just below each exhaust port out of the head. It will tell you how even the burn is. Never used one on manifolds tho. Works great on headers. But if you can see the exhaust temp higher on some than the other that means a leaner condition.
