Sounds cool, but will they even let you on the track with a cage made completely out of 0.095"? I thought minimum for the required structures was 0.120" regardless of material.

You would be correct. All main structure tubing has to be 2" .120 wall for all vehicles over 4,000 lbs. Under 4,000 lbs, has to be 1.75" .120 wall.

That's what I thought. . .that entire cage would have to be cut out and redone with 0.120" if anyone wanted to compete with it!!! So tack at least another $750 worth of tubing on top of the $1000 asking price, plus the cost of labor to cut the old cage out and re-cage it if you couldn't do it yourself. . .I bet after it was said and done it would be close to $5K just to get it re-caged!!! Not such a good deal then. . .

Or just make a sweet pre runner!

Race it as a "nostalgic race truck" and get it grandfathered in under the old cage rules. It was built before the new rules were put into place so there is no reason to not allow it. Personally I would keep as a old school Prerunner with some modern upgrades.

I agree. What a great foundation for a cool old school pre runner!

They do that??? I didn't think they fudged on the safety rules like that?

I like the old retro stuff too. . .got a '79 F-150 4x4 that I can only hope will be as cool as the couple that I have seen on this forum!!!

Probably not with SCORE as older out-of-spec vehicles had to be tagged a couple years ago to be "grandfathered," but some promoters have a vintage class.

That's what I thought. . .I'm not intimately familiar with all the classes in all the different series, that's for sure!!!

Does the current owner have any documentation Walker Evans built this truck? The ad leaves me suspicious about it's pedigree. Walker drove a Dodge exclusively during that time period and Evan Evans was racing a Class 6 Jeep Cherokee modified with hand controls.

Walker did build a Chevy. Mark Newhan has it.

I see a lot of rust. . .just make sure you don't bight off more than you can chew. . .

. . .we just bought a '40 Jeep Willys P/U truck for $800 ($700 less than the asking price) with a 350 SBC/TH350/D18 and although we are still well ahead on our expenditure, the frame had a crack in it (good thing I'm a qualified welder), and the 350 had a crack in the block across 3 cylinders (new block. . .no welding was gonna fix this crack!!!)!!! but based on what we paid for the vehicle and the fact that we got a 14-bolt rear/Dana 60 front axle set, SM-465 4-spd. manual, and NP-205 (GM) t-case for $250 (any one of those was worth the $250 except the D60 was worth at least twice that) and picked up a set of 40x13.50x17 BFG MTR's mounted on Hummer H2 8-lugs for $500 we are actually already ahead, but still there were already quite a few unexpected expenditures before I even had the Jeep stripped. . .

. . .just make sure you give it a REALLY good once over, and you double check the series rules (if you intend on racing) concerning the 0.095" tubing before you jump into it. . .

Good Luck. . .I'm all for seeing more retro racers out there!!!

Incorrect. According to the Norra website, vehicles up to 89 are good to go.

Iam talking to the current owner right now, I think Iam going to but it and build it as Walker would have built it in 1989, Even that it has no race history It would be good to have in my Vintage collection and I would try to get it done for the NORRA race. I have no idea who would drive it, Iam running the James Garner 442 and my brother is driving the Steve McQueen / Vic Hickey race truck in the 2010 NORRA 1000 Now it looks like i might enter 3 next April

I just made the deal on the Walker Evans class 8 truck, The truck will be moved to Rick Johnsons race shop in Barstow next monday, Then i will bring it home to Washington state for restoration, I never restored a new never raced truck, The plan is to get the truck to 1989 race condition if it was finished for Evan Evans and enter it in the 2010 NORRA 1000

Hey man. . .I'm in Silverdale.

Let me know when you get it up here!!!

Love to check it out sometime and meet some more people off the board. . .there aren't that many of us up here in the PNW!

Right now I'm working on a non-desert rig, but my next two projects are gonna be desert oriented. I'm gonna be pretty busy over the next couple of months fabbing a race-buggy for school, but if you ever needed a hand with fab work and I had free time I would love to help out!

PM or email me sometime (atomicjoe23@aol.com)

The truck will be moved to a friends race shop in Barstow California this Monday, I should have it home within two weeks, The plan is to build it to the way it would have been built in 1989, And sence iam driving my James Garner 442 with Rick Johnson in the NORRA 1000 next April i needed a driver for this truck, I talked to my good friend Rod Hall and he wants to drive the Walker Evans truck in the NORRA 1000 and i cannot think of a better driver then Rod,and i will leave it up to Rod who he wants as a co driver, The truck will need a few upgrades to run good but it should be a fun build, Now it looks like i have 2 trucks and 1 car entered in the 2010 NORRA 1000, I think i will need a break after this ones over

how ironic, rod in a walker evans truck. i thought i would never see or hear that. not that they were ever really "on track" rivals.
i would love to co-dog with rod. i have raced on several class 4 teams back in the day against him and to have him in a walker truck and my last name is walker. yea i put in a bid for this.

hickeyracing
September 27th, 2009, 11:36
I think it will be fun, When i talked to Rod Hall i told him i was going to take the Garner 442 to the Mint 400 to show it and even take it out on the pre run right away Rod said he would love to see some seat time so when Rod takes his hummer for the pre run we are taking the 442 and rod will drive the 442 during the pre run as much as he wants to, Iam having way to much fun with these cars and trucks, If it was about the $$ they would be sold, They will never be sold its about having fun with your friends and showing people where it and how it all got started, Right now i have 5 vintage race cars and trucks and current class 3 being built when i have the time, As far as a co-driver Iam going to talk to Rod he has first choice who rides with him, Iam going to lean towards a historic driver, Who knows Walker Evans might be interested?

Any update pics? How much did you end up getting the truck for?

I had talked ot the guy for a while and he offered me the truck AND trailer for $500!! It was a heck of a deal - but I've already got WAY too many projects going to take on another.

At least it went to a good home where it will be completed and run!!!!!

Yeah - I needed a trailer and I was searching craigslist under that keyword. His add was for the turck but he also said "and I have a 19' trailer with tandem axles... blah blah blah"

I contacted him and he sent pics. Trailer looked like crap but truck looked nice. He asked if I wanted it and I said "I wouldn't mind having it - but I just have no room for it right now - sorry"

The next day I got an email from him that said "take everything (truck and trailer) today for $500." I called a bunch of buddies and told them - but now one had any room or need for another project or wanted to drive up to Victorville to get it - so it went to someone else. Looks like a fun truck and it would have been a GREAT buy for $500. I just had waaaay too many projects going on at that time (still do) so I had no time/room for it.

I paid him $800.00 for the truck, He offered it to me for $500.00 also but i bought other parts from him also, I took some good photos and will post more later, one i good thing i got was a new Sandy Cone dana 60 with a Sandy Cone hubs 40 spline spool and 4.86 gears and ready to run that was the rear axle for the truck

If so I will REALLY be kicking myself. I already am for not having the space to grab that truck for $500...

The truck is here in Washington at my shop, I will post photos of it in my shop tonight, And that is NOT the trailer, Its are trailer, I was going to bring the 48 foot race trailer but it would have been hard to load the truck, I could have had the trailer for free but it was a piece of crap
