View Full Version : f350 7.3 diesel questions

I'm looking at buying an older f350 7.3 turbo as my tow vehicle. A 94, to be exact.

It has high mileage (about 200k), but I know that's not too bad for a diesel. I have personally seen these trucks hit 400k with no major problems as long as maintenance is done well on them

My question is, what should I be DISTINCTLY looking for when checking the truck out? Do they have any common problems?

Thanks

injectors wear out, especially with ulsd. tranny will overheat if used hard without aftermarket coolers and temp gauge. plan on a rebuild and some coolers. crank positon sensors go out (or is it cam?). glow plug relays fail. and the wiring harness for the glow plugs runs though the valve cover gasket and over time can melt especially with high underhood temps if it was used long and hard like many of them are. this model has no intercooler and makes only modest power but overall a super truck and a super engine. banks can double the power for $3-4k. i have 270k on my 95 modified for 630lb-ft and it's still relaible and strong enough that i'm looking forward to the next 100k. i like these older pre-super duty powerstrokes a lot. they are great work horses.

Thanks for the response. And yeah, that's what I keep hearing from everyone I talk to... they're mules and they just keep kicking.

In 94 about half were Powerstrokes and half were IDI models (indirect injection). Is the one you're looking at a powerstroke?
