I am a 52 year old father of two and happily married to the same woman for 28 years. I am an elementary Special Education teacher in Calexico. I have always been fascinated by off-road desert racing since I was a kid but haven't been able to truly enjoy it until recently. I loved the fact that off-road racing involved a changing terrain and the beating cars and drives took. I like the slower buggy classes (1600, class 10, etc.) because they seem to be closer to what it was like in the beginning. I bought a fiberglass dune buggy on a full VW pan with a full cage about a year ago. I have begun updating it. I already have a 6" wider front beam and I am saving up for the 3x3 trailing arms, tranny, and disc brakes (I have an '05 Honda XR 650L for sale to help fund the project). I can't decide what kind of powerplant to change to (currently has a 1500 single port). I am looking at Subaru, GM V6, Ford 2.3 SOHC, or staying with VW (but bigger,of course).
I volunteered with Drive in Plaster City this year and was at every race. I am hooked! I'm planning to make the road trip to Primm in February for the 2010 Drive kick-off. I would even love the chance to race, but I would have to win the lottery or Publishers Clearing House for that to happen :)
