are plastic fuel cells SCORE legal?
need to buy a cell so i can draw up the rear cage design.
i was looking at the RACER X cell because its cheap, but was wondering if the plastic cells are legal because they are even cheaper.
i can always make a skid plate for it.
thanks

The Racer X cells are sold as SCORE compliant. So yes, the "plastic" Racer X cells are legal. You'll need to either purchase or build a can for it, I don't think a skid plate by itself will pass tech. The entire cell needs to be enclosed by an approved container. Racer X offers a ready to go 44 gallon cell with an aluminum can that's a pretty tough price to beat. It's convenient because you get a complete system. It's always wise to double check with the manufacturer / dealer to ensure the cell you are looking at meets your sanctioning body requirements. The plastic cells are not FIA approved but most will meet SFI specs. If the cell does not have a serial number and SFI label you might have issues. That's where asking the manufacturer comes into play, some cells meet SFI specs but don't have SFI certification.

No plastic tank will pass tech. all "cells" have to have an outter can and an internal bladder with foam. the Racer X cell is a great budget option. or if you build your own can to fit in your chassis. Harmon race cells can make a bladder for it cheaper than Fuel safe. (who makes the Racer x cell)

Jeff, thanks for the great information. The Racer X Motorsports XCell is manufactured by Fuel Safe for us exclusively and comes with thier full warranty and support. However, since we started selling them in 2001 over 500 units ago, we have yet to ever have a defective unit.
It is FIA, SCORE, BITD, etc. approved and comes encased in a tig welded aluminum container, is set up for 2 1/4" or 3" remote fill with a 1" vent as well as a provision for a sending unit. We all know that racing is expensive and regardless of whichever cell you decide to go with, please go with an approved and rated cell. In addition, don;t spend your money twice as the "cheaper" plastic cells are nothing more than a holdgin tank and they will not quick fill, trust me. Time and time again we have seen customers try to speed up the filling process by adding the 1" vent leaving you still with the smaller 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" filler neck. By the time you buyt these parts to "upgrade" the cheaper cells, you are almost at what an approved and legal cell is but you would still e without the rating.
Please feel free to e-mail or give me a call with any other questions. We have years of experience with providing plumbing advice as well as proper fuel filtration, filling, and delivery components.
Thank you all again for the thread contribtions.
Best regards,

Passing tech has almost nothing to do with complying with rules or common sense. Since they don't open your fuel box to look at the bladder, anything will pass tech unless the fuel is leaking badly enough to soak the feet of the inspector. There are idiots out there who have even raced with no bladder at all, just an empty aluminum box that looked like it had a bladder. A plastic tank inside a metal box is going to pass tech.

I have always received excellent service from everyone at RacerX. Their products work as advertised and the RacerX customer service is much better than most off-road suppliers I've dealt with over the years!
