I have always heard that if you are going to be straped in a vehicle and wearing a helmet you must were a neck brace also. This so the extra wieght of the helmet doesnt give you neck injuries. The other day i was talking to a guy that said you are worst off wearing a neck brace than not. so whats the deal? Is it better to wear a neck brace with a helmet or not?

Thanks
Bryan

Wear a HNR or dont even get in the car. Neck rolls dont do anything.

We both agreed that an HNR is the way to go but the question isnt about an HNR its about a neck brace (doughnut) vs nothing. He was saying the doughnut will do more harm than having nothing at all.

Well, he is wrong... :) The donught will take some impact out when bouncing around in an off road car. Your neck will be way less sore after long rides and it will help in a wreck also even though a HNR is much more ideal.

The donut will stabilize your head. In order to keep your head stable without a donut you are tightening your neck muscles alot more than you would with a donut. If your loose your less likely to get injured

It can offer more protection in certain circumstances.

The rule of thumb is that if you have to/or are wearing a helmet you need a head restraint. The neck support or neck collar is NOT a head restraint. A head restraint is designed to prevent C spine injuries by eliminating or limiting the tension on the c spine when involved in a crash preventing the injury. These types of injuires (fracture of C1 or C2) are virtually unsurviveable. These devices are also great at reducing injuries to the remainder of the Cspine (C2-C6).

It is not that a neck collar or neck support is a bad thing to wear, it is just that it will not do anything to prevent these types of injuries. Alot of racers have stated that it helps reduce fatigue in longer races. On the flip side of that, a very firm neck collar can help reduce compression injuries after peak neck tension. The ones on the market that you find will not do this though as they are much to soft.
