i have a jeep chassis made out of 1 inch and a half chromoly tubing i was wondering how much weight this would be good to... when im done the whole rig will probably weigh somewhere around 3000lbs. someone told me that it wouldn't be strong enough, but considering most of the rigs that i race with us inch and a half water pipe and weigh about 3000 pounds. i figure the chromoly is a lot better than the scedual 40 water pipe would be on a good day so any help would be great. i don't know much about tubing or pipe so any input would be awesome... thanks

it depends what race series you do. different series have different weight/tube size rules. i personly think a very well built and designed 1.5" chassis will be good upto 3000# but i would rather see 1.75" tube. 3000 lbs seems pretty lite for a jeep...

WOW! Nice first post, I cant figure out what you are saying. But if it was me I would scrap the cromolly and go with water pipe, and use lots of it. Just joking :D.
Now really you should get the PNW4WDA comp book cause these guys dont know the rules there.
Then if the 1 1/2 tubing isn't large enough in diameter, I am really good with bondo;)
I think 1 3/4 120 wall is the smallest you can use for structural support (rollcage).

different series have different rules... you need to figure out what series you will race.

has this really ever been tested or is the size change a money thing? small trucks have been using 1 1/2 for like 30 years and i cant remember seeing a fully welded proper cage create a problem.

the racing we do up here is pretty hillbilly deluxe so it's nothin like desert racing we race for about 2 min at a time on a long track. and top speed maybe 50mph give or take... im just wanting to build it as light as i can and as safe as i can. my water pipe held up alright when i rolled it at about 40... by alright i mean i had to rebuild the cage but i didn't get hurt... but most of the rigs that run up here have cages built out of water pipe... you can only go so fast with leaf springs.... it has a 79inch wheel base center of axle to center of axle so it should be a fun ride and if i can't race it i might just build it for the sand dunes and make it two wheel drive ifs in the front maybe a 500 hp motor could be fun not gonna do so good in the woops but it's really about havin fun and what i can afford i just wanna make sure that if i wreck im not gonna die
