I have a race coming up and have almost zero safety equipment. I did get gloves and shoes for x-mas but I need the following.
Helmet (HJC AR-10 for cost and weight)
2 fire suits (cheaper ones, single layer aprox $100 level)
Neck collar (anyone recommend these? can't afford a D-cell/Hans/etc.. now)
Intercom
Looking for suggestions on models/brands and places to buy to save a buck. Im in Texas so I can't try on stuff for fit so would have to take returns on unused stuff.
Thanks, HDW

I've purchased from UPR, Parker Pumper, and PCI. All had great service and i felt the prices i paid were fair.
I would suggest spending a little more for a fire suit unless this is a one time use deal. The really inexpensive suit don't last a season and you end up spending more money on cheaper ones than if you had bought a descent one upfront.
Happy Shopping

I hear ya Rob, I hope to do a bunch of racing but money is tight right now. I saw a nicer Sparco nomex suit on UPR and other sites for 250 but sizes are limited. Does nomex stand up to wear and tear better than FR cotton?
Jeff, I have looked at your site but couldn't find intercom or radio. The helmet you suggested better than the HJC? After radio it's more expensive than the ar10. Do you guys offer a racer discount? Might get a go pro HD as well.

Nomex wears better than treated cotton because the treatment can never wear or wash out. We usually have more than 300 suits in stock this time of year and have styles and sizes that are not listed on the site.
Helmets are like shoes, some brands fit your shape and some don't. The ar10 is a nice helmet, but there are others that are easier to fit. I think a helmet that was built at the factory to circulate air works better than the added on systems you find on the HJC, but we have all available and competitive prices. We try to offer consistent low prices and good service rather than gimmicks and BS sales. I assure you if you check our prices on the major brands against the largest safety equipment suppliers in the country you will find our deals to be among the best, if not the best.
I wouldn’t say we’ve never kicked down a discount to someone one in need, but if you are 100 percent price driven without a concern for quality or safety, we may not be your guys.

Not to sound like a broken record, but getting burned is about the most painfull thing you can go through in life. I have a 3-layer sparco and CarbonX underwear. No one gets in my car w/o atleast 2-layers on. If money is tight then take Jeff up on his offer. UPR has sold me and others on my team suits and I know atleast one guy called and got a suit not on their website for a smokin' deal. Just don't be picky on the color and you can score a good deal on something that could keep you alive when a cheap one might not.

Ya bro, Rob is right. Take your personal safety more seriously then anything else on your truck. Your well being is not replaceable.
Maybe a dumb question, but do any of those store offer financing of some sort?

Well after shopping around I think I'm ready to pull the trigger. Price is not the only factor, but a big one to anyone who is a budget racer. Since I'm ordering 2 suits and a helmet, I figured I would see if there were any deals to be had.
I don't know that it matters, but I have a buggy not a truck. Hopefully that puts the fire way behind me if it happens. Already had an oil line burst during testing with no fire suits on. No fire, just a lot of smoke but we still got outa the car pretty fast.
I found a few 3 layer suits that are in my price range, or would you suggest a single with some nomex underlayers?
Jeff, I will give yall a call this evening. I think I will take your word on the helmet too, I see so many ppl with the HJC's but I know Bell has been around a long time. US made also helps sell me on the deal. I will skip the radio for now and just get the helmet.
I think I am going to try and save money on the intercom, anyone ever used a chatterbox. Motorcycle intercom thing? I can sell it to my brother when I'm ready to put in some PCI stuff.
Thanks,
HDW

I have the Chatterboxes, I use them on harleys, if you have a separate radio, then it will not I/F very easy or at all though.
I would use this first as a basic unit http://www.ruggedradios.com/race-racing-communications-store/details/618/66/intercoms/rhino-&-utv/browse-by-product/rrp150-2-place-portable-with-helmet-kits.html

The chatterbox I got was just the intercom. The race is 36mile loop and I'm hoping cell phones will work for pit comm. The chatterbox was only $115 to connect 2 ppl. The one you linked to is $375 so seems for that money I should just buy the PCI intercom system. Just wondering if the chatterbox works on bikes, should be ok in a buggy for basic comm between driver and rider?
Will get the $ from co-drivers for the other suit. So they are getting off cheap.

Personally i would go with the 2 or 3 layer suit for durability if nothing else. If you can get a 1-layer and underwear for less then go for it.
For the record we have 4 HJC SI's and a Bell. I liked the Bell for comfort but the weight of the HJC is nice the next day.
Maybe because I have never used anything but PCI I really don't know what features u need for an intercom. I'll say this though, the speakers in the helmets don't due jack and if your running a buggy w/o a muffler your going to want ear pieces of some kind.
Cool to hear about racing starting in Texas... It's a long haul from SO Cal but maybe one day they will have a race worth traveling for!
