Ok i just got a fix it ticket for not having any mudflaps on the front of my truck, because my tires stick out farther than my fenders. Has anyone else ever had this problem with the cops. Unfortunately i live in a town where CHP hates any kid with a lifted truck. My truck has only been back together for a week and a half and i have already got 2 tickets. If any of u have had this happen did u just get mud flaps to put on there and get it signed off, or did u come up with another fix for it. My last question is does anyone know of fiberglass that is a 6 inch flare for toyotas other than the tundra conversion. Cause i really dont like the look of those. I have the Desert Kit by glassworks unlimited and i love it, but i really dont want to drive around with mud flaps on the front of my truck http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There is a very long thread about tickets for things like this i.e lights, mudflaps, being lifted etc. I'am sorry to hear that you got a ticket. try a search theres a lot of info in it.

Well unless you actually get the tires covered up you will continue to get fix-it tickets. If the same cop sees you running around without the tires covered he most likely will write you up again... and again... and if he gets sick of you and the truck constantly running around town in an illegal fashion he can impound the vehicle for being a hazard to other motorists. You built it that wide and now you've got to figure out a way to make it legal. If the cops in your area really do have it in for the white fendered kids your truck is a perfect example why - it's about as illegal as it gets in some regards. I'm surprised that's all he wrote you up for too.

But to answer your first question... yes, it's normal for cops to write people up for this and it ain't just prerunners - it can be ANY vehicle where the tires stick out beyond the fenders in such a way to not be covered. Low riders used to get it, Jeep owners get it, SuperDuty and HD owners get it, and as you found out so do the prerunners.

I must be lucky cause i drive my truck everyday and have only been pulled over once for no light covers, he just asked if i had them and to put them on so i did and thats it. That was before the lt which ive had for over a year. Must be because i have my fenders painted. Lol Sucks to hear that about your truck though.

What about making the mudflaps removable so when you get out to the dezert you can take em off to keep from tearing them up?

I feel sorry for you guys down there. Up here in victorville ive been followed by cops, but never pulled over in my dad's 72 K5 rock crawler with 40's that stick out, a welded rear end and brake lights that are the size of half dollars that you can barely see.

91yotaprerunner,
I take it you got cited for 27600 V.C., which states:
No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread. This section does not apply to those vehicles exempt from registration, trailers and semitrailers having an unladen weight of under 1,500 pounds, or any vehicles manufactured and first registered prior to January 1, 1971, having an unladen weight of under 1,500 pounds.

According to this section, the wheels must be covered by some portion of the fender or mudflaps. If your tires are wider than any point of the fender coverage it is a violation. It does sound like a cheesy violation, but it is about safety, especially in wet conditions when water, mud, rocks, etc. are getting thrown onto vehicles to the rear. My suggestion would be to get wider fenders or put some type of mudflap on (removable, etc.). It is a fix it ticket, so try to get it done before the date they wrote on the citation and have it signed off. You will most likely have to pay a small administrative fee.

i would rather get another set of fiberglass, but i dont really like the tundra conversion and as far as i know they are the only 6 inch flare fiberglass out there for toyotas, if anyone knows of another let me know.

Matthew, I checked out your website you put up of your truck and damn, your truck is raked!!! I'd guess once you get the rear done or if you get some more lift in the back, your truck will look more normal and safe in the eyes of an officer. Just build some removable mud flaps, or better yet get some sick rally style carbon fibre http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/smile.gif I think it can be done and still look kind of cool, even then who cares - mud flaps will just claim that your s*** is wider than everybody elses!

"I know this is probly greek to all u ladies, but im just proud of my truck. " -homepage

A lot of that is greek to cops too. It really is a fix-it ticket magnet. My tires stick out further than my glass too, but my truck sits a little more level (Actually, lower in the front all trophy-truck style... lol) and definetly isn't over 6 INCHES wider PER SIDE! That's really wide...

i understand my truck is wide, but its not like its the first truck ever to be 6 inches wider per side. Ive seen toyotas with kits that are 8 inches wider per side. Look at pats truck, his is 6 inches per side, now is his truck too wide? Or what about ESB kit at 5.5 per side. The reason i asked if it was normal is because every lifted truck in this town has its tires sticking out past the fenders, but no one had had that problem before, so i wsa asking of others experiences. And i was also inquiring about if anyone had seen fiberglass with a 6 inch flare other than the tundra conversion.

guess what i got this weekend?????
a fix it ticket for no mud flaps, and one for my front plate not being visible enough...the plate's half hidden behind the bumper/skid plate. tires are barely out past the fenders, maybe an inch and half...
the cop didnt notice my lack of seat belt, so i guess i got kinda lucky there....

i'm thinking about going with the yosemite sam's that say "back off"...or maybe some Peterbuilt ones, i dunno....

that really suxs, well the cops in laughlin didnt seem to like me all that much, i no sooner turned on to casino drive when i got in to town and a metro cop spotted me, flipped a b!tch, and hit the sirens. First thing he asked was if my truck was street legal and i told him yes. Than he told me that he pulled me over because my front end sits higher than the back, and that it is illegal in nevada for ur truck to sit like that. Than he tried to get me for the expired tags and i just showed him my renewal notice. Than he went to his car and came back and said he was not gonna write me a ticket, but i have to either park my truck all weekend or lower the front and if he or another cop sees me again they will have it impounded. I think it was a bogus law cause he didnt have anything to pull me over for, he didnt even know the tags were expired until he got behind me to stop me. So i continued to drive it around the rest of the weekend and didnt have any problems. I just couldnt believe he did that when 90% of the trucks there this weekend sat higher in the front. got to love our law enforcement system. Thats not the first time ive been pulled over for nothin. The last time the cop wouldnt tell me what he pulled me over for until he got to take a nice look throughout my truck. Than decide to get me because i had something hanging from my rear veiw mirror. But sorry to hear about ur ticket. maybe we can start a new thing with the mudflaps. http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hate to tell you, but your truck really sticks out like a sore thumb. I mean your avator even looks scary. Your truck is like a magnet for cops. Widen the rear, get bigger glass, take out some of the "rake" or stop complaining.

Most desert built trucks sit level not nose high, the only time the nose is high is on accelleration.

From the pics I've seen of your truck, it does have quite a bit more rake than is normal for most "prerunners". Maybe you could stick some 2" blocks in the back temporarily, although I don't know if yotas run the springs on to of the axle or not. But I doubt if there is any kind of actual ordinance dictating how level a vehicle has to sit.

I was going to bite my lip on this one but I decided not to. Big surprise huh? I was on the 15 freeway last night heading back from Laughlin and your dumb [I have been warned] was going 85-90mph in and out of the fast lane. I usually speed when I drive and when I get pulled over I don't blame the cops because usually it's my own dumb fault, usually. If I was a cop and saw your truck going 90mph on the freeway I'd pull you over and write you a ticket. Face it, you drive a super cop magnet mobile and now it's time to step up and fix the thing. It sits like its ready for blast off and is so blatantly illegal you should feel lucky it hasn't been impounded yet.
