Hey Guys,
I have a 91 Toyota p/u with a manual tranny. Lately the thing won't stay in gear, I'll be in first and the shifter will pop back into neutral, it also happens in third and fifth.
Is it my clutch or has the whole tranny gone bad?
Thanks!

Do you have a body lift. When I had mine on it would pop put of gear because with the body lift the double boots were higher up and would pull the shifter out of gear.

No body lift, just a a-arm from Camburg. I'm gettin kind of worried since San Felipe is coming up, so I got to have it fixed soon! I'm just hoping its a quick fix, if not I guess I'm getting a new tranny.

Toyotas are known for having a bushing in the shifter wear out and cause alot of play in the shifter. Is there alot of play in ur shifter when it is in gear. Mine does this also and its because i need to replace that bushing. I think it was offroad.com that talked about that somewhere. if i find the link i will post it. Hope that helps u.

Check your motor mounts. The could be bad and the motor and tranny move enough to have the shifter hit the bidy work.

pull the shifter out and replace the plastic cap (bushing) on the end of the shifter, there is also an larger outer bushing that the large ball of the shifter rides on . very common. $10 max from the dealer.

Yeah sounds like the bushing to me, I had to replace mine on my 93 Toyota 2x.

Matthew,
I'm callng first thing in the morning, I hope Pat's right! $10 for a dealer part is a deal, I'll post it once I get it, there are enough Toyota guys here to appreciate it.
