John, any good insurance agent will take pictures of your truck. If anything happens, you and your insurance will "settle" on what you vehicle is worth, compared to vehicles that are in the same shape. Keep good records of what you do and take pictures. I just went though buying this kind of insurance and my agent was very easy to work with regarding my Ranger.

reciepts reciepts reciepts, and plenty of pictures. if you dont have reciepts for all the parts you have on the truck get prices from companys in writing or clip catalog pages, get reciepts from whatever shop (if any) is helping on the build even if they aren`t charging you full price, and take pictures of everything.

i`ve never had a problem getting insured or filing a claim with all those things covered.

John,
Find a broker that specializes in agreed value coverage. You will need complete documentation, and it may cost you a few more $ that El Cheapo Inc company. If you insure it with a standard carriers, as a 79 Blazer, they will pay out what the market average of a 79 blazer is worth, not necessarily what you think (or could prove) it is worth. Many companies do not cover not OEm equipment, big wheels, King shocks, custom paint, roll cage, suspension upgrades, etc.
I would also spend a bit more and get the Uninsured / underinsured coverage too. Most low $ policies that other people have have a maximum limit of 5k to 25k. There are some 50k and 100k out there, but not much. One of these clowns totals the Blazer, you will only get the amount of the policy - 5k would zuk.

Finally I have a vehicle that doesn't need all this extra hassle. Just book value and I've made a profit. Oh, did I mention that........... http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Some company's will make/ask you take the vehicle to an apraiser http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/confused.gif this way you have a vaule for your vehicle to be insured off of and insurance companies like hearing it from a "profesional" I would call your current carrier and see who they recomend to take it to. Thats what i had to do with my old mustang

what blue coyote said is true. and so is what jerry said. 98% of insurance companies are going to rate the vehicle at ACV (actual cash value), that pretty much falls under blue book value. you want to get something that has replacement cost and an agreed upon value... policies like these are classic car insurance or collector car insurance, they get the vehicle appraised and go by that value, but I dont know what they will say when it's for offroad use...but it should be covered for theft. I would recommend getting a lo-jack installed. are you going to be driving it on the street? if so, get the uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage.

start with an apraisel and bring it when you shop for insurance.

FWIW state farm has covered us for damage when "off road" i have also been covered while racing! they got my loyalty for life with that one.

good luck.

Hey tony, does mejames do issurance on race vehicles and team equipment? i still don't have anything on my pro-2. i have nightmares about getting in a bad wreck on the way to the races. ok time to think happy thoughts, where's that renezeder video!

One thing is for sure. Dont say anything about Off-Road to AAA insurance. When I totaled my truck in Pismo I had to play with words a little. Sand Highway is a "designated driving path" on a "state beach". Just in case you were wondering. AAA doesn't cover any off-road damage, at all, period.

As far as on road accidents, thats a bit easier. If you bring the truck in to be appraised when you put it on your insurance, you'll be fine. I had to do the same thing for my 68 Chevelle SS 396 that the insurance company thought was only worth $5000. I had to show them reciepts for everything. If I remember correctly, they would only cover 85 cents on the dollar for "after market parts" You will end up paying more, but I think its worth the peace of mind.

SLO, when I rolled my truck out in Barstow AAA paid me plenty. It was a total loss and they even let me buy it back from them (so I could part it out). I told them it was my fault and off-road. Maybe their policy has changed, that was in 1995.

I'm pretty sure their policy has changed. I totaled my truck May 5th 2002. The first thing the lady asked me was whether or not I was off roading. She told me that if I was off road then they wouldnt cover it. Any one else have any experiences with AAA?

my neighbor has grundy worldwide covering his 97 390 fastback. They will pay 100% of the cost to replace anything he has a recipt for. PRetty good considering he pays the same as he would have paid for state farm to only cover $2500. The only downside is that there is a guy that comes out every month to make sure he dosent drive it over 4K miles a month. I guess they dont wanna take the risk of insuring a high doller muscle car for daily driving, but its not hard to disconnect the odo.

It is easy to not drive 4K miles a month.

Yeah, it's probably more like 4K a year. I used to have a 66 Nova that was insured under a classic car policy and it was 5K miles a year or less.
