talk to BLM Director Bob Abbey

    talk to the blm leader

    Dear racers

Last year President Obama announced the final report of his America's Great Outdoors (AGO) initiative, featuring Americans who are excited about conservation and ready to get involved in the outdoors. Many listening sessions were held throughout the country. The public was heard. You want the outdoors to be relevant and accessible. You want your special places to be managed sustainably. But most importantly, you want to help make it happen.

The AGO Report called for the establishment of the Federal Interagency Council on Outdoor Recreation ( FICOR) as one of the vehicles to engaging the public in further identifying those ideas and places where the FICOR can be partners and support. Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey is the lead in establishing the FICOR and he wants to hear from you.

Please join BLM Director Bob Abbey and the members of the FICOR for this important conference call.

Looking at the statistics - http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medial...forAmerica.pdf - and being mindful the Obama Administration is pushing the "sound investment" of public land use (which of course include recreation activities), take a look at the jobs directly related to "recreation" in two key States (California and Nevada).

The other state figures' pale in comparison, so here are just a few facts we might want to re-emphasize in any and all public comments:

    1. Follow in accordance with Obama's emphasis (edict???) "The BLM; A Sound Investment for America" - that off-road vehicle activities and events are under the heading of "recreation", and recreation produces jobs"...

    2. Remind Mr. Abbey that as a group, we are self-sufficient and have generally done everything in compliance with authorities (Local, State and Federal), we are open-minded, and we strive to do even better...

    3. "Family values" and "teamwork" are focal points that come "natural" to the spirit of off-road racing - crossing all borders and boundries....

    4. Remind Mr. Abbey about Primm 2011 being relocated to a host country; who lost?

Great points to share. If we speak their language and make them feel good about what they are trying to accomplish, but squeeze in the benefits of OHV to actually benefit the OVR's, it would kinda be just like how the politicians squeeze the pork barrel spending & ear marks into the bills & legislation.

Re: talk to BLM Director Bob Abbey

Just concluded the one hour Conference Call with BLM Director Abbey and a host of other representatives of FICOR (Fish and Game, BLM, Army Corps of Engineers, et al...) and the Great American Outdoors Initiative.

For those who were able to take the time out to listen in, the OHV User Group was adequately represented. I was third in line and started off by saying: "If someone would have told me 10 or 20 years ago I would be able to have a discussion with such a group of individuals as we are right now; I would have told them they were crazy!"

After thanking the group and the hosts, I stressed the "family aspect" of off-road racing and OHV use telling everyone: "I always knew where my kids were, and my parents always knew where I was..." I "camped on" to a comment about the sunrises, afternoon fresh air and the evening sunsets and the family campfires. This really hit a home run; it's true - we are all one big family and trying to do our part to keep our lands accessable.

My question was whether or not FICOR was going to have steering committees to keep the "professionalism" in "ultra-hazardous activities" such as off-road racing? I hope I left the impression "we are willing to do more in order to access more..." land. and like many other questions and comments, my question was taken under submission, but Director Abbey was gracious and complimentary.

I did not hear from anyone else who had a vested interest in the California/Nevada land use issues. Reps from Oregon, Louisiana, Wyoming and the various Indian nations piped in, but it does not matter. The good news is the Roundtable seemed eager to get everyone involved and served as a stern reminder that the OHV users seemed to have been "left out" of the original GAO and FICOR Planning - but not any more!

Obama wants JOB CREATED and if WE CREATE JOBS, we can expect more land! I took copious notes and will either add more on this thread or create another, but thanks so much to the SNORE Fan who created this thread and provided the information so I (we) could participate!
