Looks like its running a spool. is that correct? I didnt think anyone had success with cv's and spools.
Yes, a spool would be one term for it, if we used a convertional rear end. In our transaxle the CV's bolted directly to what we called the Bull Gear, which was one big solid mass of steel. The space between the CV joints was about 1 1/4", as they were bolted directly inside this final drive gear.

It is nice to see all of the different interest and support of this PPI 015 project from all of you.

    Regards,
    Tom Morris

Sorry, missed answering this part.....Success with CV's and spools ????? It is a very thin line of a balancing act between the axle diameter to allow twist like a torsion bar, the transmission input shaft diameter for the same reason and most importantly the clutch system balance of clutch plate configuration and material vs pressure plate clamping force. Believe it or not you do want a little bit of clutch slip, nothing that you will feel while driving, but just enough to take the sharp bite and impact loads off of the CV's. Bigger is not always better. It is amazing what a little change in any of the above will do, especially the clutch tuning as it makes the most difference for good and bad in CV life as well as the rest of the drive train.

That makes perfect sense that trevor dude [engeenering pflugers truck] made things bigger and bigger and bigger and the cvs still broke now we know the answer to that trucks problem put the pig on a diet and reduce the mass of the entire rear drive system.

Larry Roeseler drove the first leg in the Baja 2000! If I can find it I have some great home video of him hauling the mail!!!

Awesome thread. It is cool to see such history come back to life, a huge thanks to TM and everyone who made this happen.

So, were ever 015 ends up, if it makes the rounds, we at KarTek would love to have the opportunity to put this on display. We have the perfect spot, in the window room were everyone on the 91 freeway will see it. Tom, please keep us in mind if by chance there is a possibility, THANKS!!

We were fortunate enough to have Larry come on board it the beginning of 2000. This was to have Larry partner with Ivan and split the driving duties for the Nevada 2000 6 day event along with the Score Baja 2000. The Nevada 2000: after a short in the engine wiring harness was tracked down and replaced after 2 days of suffering, then a fuel vaporlock issue haunted 015 for a couple more days and finally sidelined the truck for an hour or so while leading the race 15 miles from the finish of day 5. Day 6 was a mad run to catch and pass, ended up 2nd overall. Baja 2000: leading by an hour and 15 min at the 1/2 way point. Dropped a valve and kaboom. Larry was awsome to work with as well as Ivan. We had hopes of running several more years together.........

AP28 Chassis #2 was out testing all day yesterday. Did pretty well, CV issues apear to be gone. Will be testing it more soon to do long term durability testing. It was interesting seeing AP28#2 run in some of the same areas that we just did in Barstow with PPI 015 last week.
