Find Adam GunnSlinger. The photos a little smokey but he's in the stands

Deegans seem to find the right mix of racing and family. Congrats on the wins today.

With a stiff wind helping to keep the heat at bay, Miller Motorsports Park was the place to be if you were in the Salt Lake City area today, as the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by GEICO, brought fans out in their thousands to see Round 7 of the 2012 championship. In just three short years, this venue has rapidly grown in popularity with local supporters, who packed the stands to the brim, including the all-new 1500-seat stands that have just been added at the east end of the track. Fans came in anticipation of some exciting races, and the drivers gave them plenty to tell their friends and co-workers about, as some of the best races of the season unfolded here in this beautiful valley this afternoon. Several drivers came back to the fore here today, as others who’d been breezing through the season hit their first real issues.

The final race of the day was also one of the best, and for defending class champion Brian Deegan, it was the perfect ending to a terrific return to form. Deegan’s #38 Rockstar/Makita Ford ran in second behind Jeff Geiser’s #44 Mickey Thompson/BulletProofDiesel.com Chevrolet in the early going, but with a terrific sliding inside pass at turn three on lap six, Deegan grabbed the lead and never looked back. Behind Deegan, Geiser had his mirrors full of Marty Hart in the #15 ReadyLift Off Road Suspension/GearUp2Go.com Ford, and in the latter stages of the race, Rob MacCachren in the #21 Rockstar/Makita Ford. Deegan opened up a comfortable lead while the other three battled fiercely amongst themselves, which culminated in Geiser’s getting spun out in turn one, for which MacCachren received a black flag. Geiser dropped away from the top spots, while Hart moved comfortably up to second. Up front, Deegan got the win after a rough last couple of races, with Hart taking second, and Patrick Clark a very impressive third (his first podium in the class) in the #52 Patrick Clark Racing/Eibach Springs Chevrolet. Rob Naughton finished fourth in the #54 Lunar Pages Web Hosting/Hart and Huntington Ford, ahead of Robby Woods (who debuted an all-new truck today) in the #99 Lucas Slick Mist/General Tire Chevrolet.

After taking six straight wins to open the 2012 season, Kyle LeDuc was certainly a marked man here in Utah. The question on everyone’s mind was certainly, “Can anyone beat Kyle?” Carl Renezeder looked somewhat capable of doing so after yesterday’s qualifying session, but when LeDuc grabbed yet another pole, he was once again looking like the odds-on favorite. LeDuc looked good early, moving up to third behind his brother Todd and Renezeder, but when an issue struck Kyle’s right front, it quickly became apparent that the streak would be over. That wasn’t a bad thing though, because up front, Todd LeDuc and Renezeder were putting on a great race for the lead. Renezeder looked to be a little quicker, and got several strong runs out of turn four and into turn five as he tried to make the pass for the lead, but each time, LeDuc had him covered, and shut the door consistently to hang on to the lead. Renezeder finally managed to find an opening, though, and with a little bit of careful track positioning, he forced LeDuc wide at turn one and moved into the lead. LeDuc did his best to battle back, but Renezeder was simply hooked up today, and would not be denied his 98th career victory. Renezeder picked up his first win in the new #1 Lucas Oil/General Tire Nissan, breaking a long winless streak that stretched back to November of last year. Todd LeDuc finished second in his #7 Rockstar/Makita Ford, followed by a strong run from Eric Barron in the #32 Maxxis/Rancho Performance Drivetrain Toyota in third. Fourth place went to Ryan Beat in the #46 eBay Motors/Hart and Huntington Ford, and rounding out the top five was local favorite Jerry Daugherty in the #23 E3 Spark Plugs/Racin Dirty Chevrolet.

    Pro Lite Unlimited
You’d never guess it by looking at his truck at race’s end, but Brian Deegan survived one of the most carnage-filled races in Pro Lite Unlimited history to pick up his second win of the season in the #38 Rockstar/Makita Ford. Deegan ran third in the early going, then moved up to second when RJ Anderson bicycled in turn six, before taking the lead by passing Ryan Beat on the inside at turn four. From there, Deegan opened up a safe gap over his pursuers, and despite several full course cautions that left trucks scattered around the sidelines (and which gave guys like Beat, Matt Cook, Bradley Morris, and Justin Smith many chances to close up on the leader), Deegan managed to do exactly what he needed to every time, and was simply untouchable as he bounced back from a rough run of races to pick up the win. Second went to the #51 Premiere Motorsports Group/Black Rhino Ford of Beat, who picked up his first podium in the class, as did Smith, who rounded out the top three in his #19 Competitive Metals/Metal Mulisha Ford. Fourth place went Morris in the #24 GoldStar Asphalt!/Lucas Oil Ford, and fifth place was the very battered #88 Toyo Tires/Fiberwerx Ford of Austin Kimbrell.

    Super Lite
After winning last night’s Super Lite Grillz ‘n’ Thrillz special event, Sheldon Creed was again on fire early in today’s Super Lite race, taking the lead by lap three, and holding it through lap eight. Creed then bobbled out of turn one, and was slow up the ramp on the tabletop jump. This allowed Ryan Hagy to close right up, and Hagy made the pass for the lead, just ahead of the Competition Yellow. Hagy got a good restart, and for the entire second half of the race, it looked as though nobody had anything for Hagy, and that Hagy would finally get that elusive first win. However, on the final lap, nerves must’ve gotten to Hagy, as he slid wide and into the outside k-rail between turns one and two, handing the lead to Creed. Creed cruised home from there to pick up the win in his #74 BFGoodrich Tires/Fox Racing Shox truck, ahead of Drew Britt in the #7 Mickey Thompson/Universal Technical Institute machine, and Dawson Kirchner in the #18 K&N/General Tire entry, which won a close drag race with Jessie Johnson out of the final corner. Johnson took fourth in his #15 SoCal Super Trucks/Speed Energy machine, and rounding out the top five was Brent Fouch in the #21 Fouch Racing/Fox Racing Shox entry.
Today’s racing was good, but history tells us that tomorrow’s race should be even better, so be sure to get out here to Miller Motorsports Park and see for yourself. Gates will again open to the public at 9:00am, with racing starting at 12:00 noon, and Opening Ceremonies at 2:00pm. The stands were packed early today, so make sure you get here ASAP to get your favorite spot!

Thanks to Scott Neth for the awesome Race Recap!!
