Re: how to get 500hp out of my 302
I'd go with Dirt Yota as the best answer!
I had a 302 similar to the OP and it was expensive and hard to get 250HP out of the little V-8. I eventually had to go with a 351W and build up a C6 to notice any gains.
Ford has that newer Coyote Motor they are selling as crate packages to compete with the LS powerplants. Not sure on price or HP range, but it might be worth looking into.

C and J carbs or call Barry and Jeremy at Gearworks, they build awesome carbs as well. Just picked up my new carb for my Boss 427 engine we are building for our new class 8 from Gearworks and its a piece of work for sure.
so you think the c4 wont hold up to 500hp? even when its built?

i was also thiking of using a 351 but i heard there not good for torque and there lower reving engines that dont like to be at high rpms.... my buddy has a supercharged built 351 that is now a 412 andit makes 500 hp, but he has gone through 5 motors with only maby 25 hours on the truck... do you know what the cost of the coyote crate engine is?

I would find a 6.0 truck motor(lq4) or ls1 bottom end. then throw a good size cam in it with ls6 or aftermarket valve train. you can get brand new GM heads that are cnc ported with oversized valves for like 1200. that will bump the compression up to about 10.5:1 ish with the lq4 or 11:1 with an ls1. easily run on pump gas. that should get you over 400hp for fairly cheap and it will be VERY reliable unlike a stroker you would have to build. As cheap insurance buy a High flow milodon oil pump, arp rod bolts and install new bearings, that will make the bottom end pretty much bullet proof!
As far as managment goes, the GM EFI is VERY simple/clean. Its also tunable if you go to the right dyno shop.
not to fond of chevy in the first place and putting one in a ford for that matter.. but my buddy is doing a 383 build and i was considering that with a th400

my buddy has a c4 behind his 300hp 302 and has nothing but problems with it. he has it built now to somewhat hold up to the power but he spent alot on it buying billet and 300m parts for it. i wouldnt even think of running 500hp through one off road.

If you want 500hp out of a 302 this is what you need to do. Pick up your phone and call Total Performance in Santee CA.

If you are considering a 383, you will want to look into an LS. Here's a 6.0L LQ4 build that car craft did, http://www.carcraft.com/projectbuild...t_results.html. 480 hp out of an unrebuilt stock lower end and heads. Plus, stock LS blocks can handle more HP than you can throw at it. Hotrod or car craft did an test with a junkyard 4.8L bottom end, twin turbo'ed it up to 1200hp without grenading, and had 60 dyno pulls at over 1000hp. $5000 budget would be enough to cover motor, rebuilt t400 and new torq converter.
I realized a while ago that I'm more fond of my money than sticking with a ford.

^^^^^^ smart man....lol
I have an all steel 383 cast block with vortec heads and good internal parts it makes 400+ reliable ponies. Been in my truck for 10 years only had to replace the cam because I over reved the motor. Can't say enough about Chevy motors and being able to get more bang for your buck than Ford.

Re: how to get 500hp out of my 302
the c4 will die with that kind of power, i know alot of drag racing guys use them, but this is not drag racing. The 351w. is a great engine, stroke it and put some compression in it and youve got easily 600 hp. I am a carburetor guy all the way, unless you can afford the motec stuff, but thats for the millionaires of our sport. 2 rules i live by, the simplar the better, and the faster they go, the faster they blow. If you build it right the first time, the less youll spend on it when you find you want more power and so on. just my inexperienced 2 cents worth. the c6 is a great transmission but finding the right parts to make them hold up is getting hard. the th400 is a awesome trans, and with the right valve body from gear works or culhanes and a few other added accessories, youve got a bullet proof trans for along time. We raced a v8 ranger for along time and went through alot of growing pains and found that this is a great combo. we had a stroked 347 and a th400. worked great and won alot of races on it.
