how to get 500hp out of my 302
im looking to get 500 somewhat reliable hp out of my 302. i was thinkin about bore and stroking it to a 331 or a 347. i was going to use all lightened parts but i heard for a desert truck it will just destroy itself after being at high rpms and mashing on it for to long. i want to know what builds people have done and what parts to use to get these ponies out of this motor. i am most likely going to keep it fuel injected, but may be willing to go to carb depending on the build. if someone could help me out and tell me what parts to use i would appreciate it.

Re: how to get 500hp out of my 302
if you want to stick with a 302 it will get kinda pricey to get to 500 hp. my friend has a 302 with pretty much stock lower, afr heads, ratio rockers, cam, ford motorsports intake plenum, big injectors, bigger throttle body/ maf, and a few other things and it dyno'd 200hp to the wheels. thats through a c4, atlas II, and 9" with 35" tires. so we are thinking 300 at the crank.
not very much considering the money he put into it....

Put a Chevy in it....lol. Lots of power for less money than building a Ford.

What kind of 302 are we talking about? older style carbed from f-100/150? or newer 5.0 mustang type? The new "Boss" 302 is making around 500hp. Is it for a ranger or a bigger truck?

We used to run 5.0 mustangs in time trails, and the only way to get reliable 500+hp is boost
My personal car had a stock low mile bottom end (except for the cam) TFS heads (with firering gaskets), intake, and long tubes. ATI intercooled supercharger pushing 14-21 psi depening on the track. At 18psi it dynoed at 550hp at the wheels.
If I was to build the same car today, I'd go twin turbos, to not have to deal with the drive belt.
Or I'd swap in an LS based engine with less boost

what fuel do you plan to run?
stroke it, put some good compression to it with some good quality pistons, get some really good flowing heads & intake package matched with a proper bump stick combination for your application. decide if you want efi or carb. don't skimp on your valve train or oiling system as well.
it's very doable, just not budget friendly.
don't forget you will still have a 2 bolt main unless you go with an older boss block iirc.

Re: how to get 500hp out of my 302
-its an 88 efi bronco motor
-the truck is a ranger but doing a full race truck basically a trophy ranger
-my budget is about 5k
-c4 trans
-full floater 9''
-most likely doing efi maby a proflow kit.. just dont want the hassle of tuning a carb but will consider it if the power is right
-i was plannng on doing a 331 or 347 bore and stroker kit, full hydraulic roller rocker, 10;1 comp heads, cam, high rise intake, dont know wich pistons or connecting rods.
-most likely just going to run 91 pump gas

Re: how to get 500hp out of my 302
start all over... the c4 you want to put behind the 302 that you dont have enough money for to make 500hp isnt gonna last. chevy LS and th400 is THE way to go if you have a budget(umlimited budgets it doesnt matter the brand of motor since nothing is stock). I would find a 6.0 truck motor(lq4) or ls1 bottom end. then throw a good size cam in it with ls6 or aftermarket valve train. you can get brand new GM heads that are cnc ported with oversized valves for like 1200. that will bump the compression up to about 10.5:1 ish with the lq4 or 11:1 with an ls1. easily run on pump gas. that should get you over 400hp for fairly cheap and it will be VERY reliable unlike a stroker you would have to build. As cheap insurance buy a High flow milodon oil pump, arp rod bolts and install new bearings, that will make the bottom end pretty much bullet proof!
As far as managment goes, the GM EFI is VERY simple/clean. Its also tunable if you go to the right dyno shop.

check out Dss racing engines, they make great horsepower and offer the Boss Block or the regular block with a girdle. Yes, The c4 will no longer be a trans for you, Adapt a th400 behind it and away you go. also, Go with a carburetor that is built for off road, its much easier and less garbage on top. C and J carbs or call Barry and Jeremy at Gearworks, they build awesome carbs as well. Just picked up my new carb for my Boss 427 engine we are building for our new class 8 from Gearworks and its a piece of work for sure.
