I ran some of the Saddleback races and helped with the race bus that you see in the advertisement, It was built by Dave Beeson (Rip) in Bellflower. It ran a Zenith carbed 2180 built by my race Partner Hank Roed (Rip). Hank and I also ran the 77 riverside race of champions I just posted some pics of that under Vintage.

Always dug that Class 5 Type 2 Transporter, wondered how it rode with seats over front axle.

Didn't think so much of Class 5 Karmann Ghias, just didn't seem right.

AZ races mostly bootleg in them days, 'cepting Parker. Ran the old Brenda 50 course a couple years back, of course, no sign of race after 32 years.

Re: Who did run that race in 1977?

I believe it honored the old Brenda Cut Off, a desert route I-10 would eventually follow. It was NW of the intersection of Indian School Road and the Hassayampa.

I videotaped it, put it on a KPHO TV-5 sportscast. At which point the racers informed me it had been a bootleg event. The late Max McClusky took the O/A in a 10 car. Few watched KPHO's Saturday night newsblock, no charges ensued, though Max was rummored to race with a glass bottle of Spanada twixt his legs. I did see a sippin' hose leading into his full face MC helmet.

Fall of '76, IIRC. Wish I had kept that 3/4" videotape, but we erased all evidence before management showed up Monday morn, mostly because we needed that tape to record on again. Wallace and Ladmo was bulk erased after each airing, then we'd use the same tape, day after day, until it wore out, recording on 2" inch reel-to-reel. W&L had the 20th anniversary of the shows cancellation in 2009 in Tempe. You are too young to recall the show, but it is an AZ legend as much as Beard, Ragland, Woods, Geisers, etc. are in the AZ off road family.

I've never known you to work. You at UofA now? Santa Catalinas get any snow out of this storm? Still got the rootbeer Ford shorty?

    [Sorry for the hijack, SC]

Curmudgeon; That Transporter was NOT a class 5 It was and still is the only aircooled legal class 7 (minitruck) and a true Barndoor. I owned it for a year or two several years ago. It is still up in the NW and at last report still drives. I undrestand the ride was very bad with the original Sandblaster Jrs on the front. But was at least somewhat improved with bigger (more cushion) tires replacing the Jrs. Inow regret selling is as it would be perfect foe NORRA!
