Re: Who did run that race in 1977?
The main reason the 1967 beetle was the car of choice for class 11 in the 70s was not because it was a classic car like they are today, they were a dime a dozen, the main reason was the 1500 engine which there was a A model and a B model and if you had B parts on a A model you were a DQ, you had to run the exact engine-trans combo that came with the car model you raced, 12 volt and beilieve it or not SWING AXEL in the rear. People today always cry and say class 11 should run stock engines, that is one of the reasons class 11 almost died because of the tech hasles involved in racing factory stock cars. Out of a 60-70 car field 95 percent were 1967, a few 68 swing cars and a very few IRS cars that everyone was scared of that IRS thing in the 70s! The 70s from 75 threw 78 was the most exciting time racing to me, I can think of SO MANY of those class 11 cars sitting in impound like it was yesterday and 98 percent do not exist anymore. I still have the 67 that my dad and uncle Jack built, the IRS car we tried ended its life as a 5-1600 and does not exist anymore. I know Tom Haluberta still has his original class 11 that is a IRS car, I dont think there is one single piece of straight metal on it LOL it still has the fiberglass seats in it! I saw one sitting in a field in realto that looked to have raced in the 70s but it basically had a tree growing out of it, it was a 67. What was really cool about that time period is all the lettering and stripes were all painted and pinstriped by hand on most cars. I was just a teenage kid when I met Hank Road and he was one of the few that treated me not as a kid but as a equal racer at that time.
37th year and still love it!!

Re: Who did run that race in 1977?
Most likely Hank said it had 88s because the class limit was 2.0 L.

Re: Who did run that race in 1977?
Sometime after the NORRA 1000. Don't know exactly but will probably leave about May 8 to 10. I'll check in with Bret shortly after arrival. Any special reason for asking?

Re: Who did run that race in 1977?
Hi all.
Just bought the '55 Baja Barndoor Truck from Clara.
She and her partner Greg put a fresh 1914cc engine in it, went over the mechanicals, and got it road ready.
My bride and I flew out the Seattle, picked up the truck, and drove it 1200 miles to Long Beach, CA for the Barndoor VW Bus reunion.
58 total Barndoor buses showed up. Amazing show.
I put a "33" number on the doors in homage of its Hot VW's look shown in the beginning of this thread.
Ran into Larry Rick and several others who wrenched on this bus back in the '70's.
If anyone has other photos or recollections of the bus, I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks,
John

Re: Who did run that race in 1977?
I was involved in that bus with Hank Roed and Dave Beeson when he built it, but I don't recognize the name Larry Rick but my memorys not that great. I can tell you almost anything you want to know about it and in fact I still have the original specs on the motor from Hank that I kept and I have the original Trans specs and original case and parts from it that I saved when it was rebuilt before Dave closed the salvage yard down. Do you know who it was you talked to I live out east for decades and most of us are gone. Sam Schull is in Texas and Dave Beverly still in Cali. I posted a note here on Dave Beeson passing. In some of my photos when our class 11 was being built there were shots of the bus in the background when Deavers was doing the cage work. Somebody here brought up a good point on engine size that the rules required for that bus to race but the build specs I got from Hank and from what I remember seems different from what the rules stated, I hope you can do some resto work on it.

Re: Who did run that race in 1977?
oldschool5er,
Thanks for the information. Larry is shown in this photo. He said he cut the front wheel wells early on in the truck's construction, but didn't do much else.
He was just happy to see it, and to fill me in on some details about Dave Beeson.
When I drove up to the OCTO show in Long Beach, longtime Hot VW's personality
Richard Kimble, who was helping park buses at the show, walked up and said "Did this bus run the Baja de Saddleback back in the '70's?" I replied, why, yes, it is
the very same bus. He then said "I helped organize that race". Pretty neat.
