Don't help them, sheesh Pete relax a bit will ya? Quit a ring like a little kid. I'm just the guy that rides in the truck and wants to find out some info. I'm not at shop working on it, so who know if anything will even change.

The trucks fuel plumbing has been the same from day one. difference now is the pump gas. If thats the issue than I'm confused how a "stock" vehicle can run here. Pumps in tank would be help but I'd guess the pumps are on the edge of being too hot then and the race fuel was the only thing keeping the vapor lock from happening ?

The sponsors market the truck regardless who the driver is the day of the races. Get over it already.

From my understanding the vapor lock happens on the suction side from trying to suck it from the bottom of the tank. The pumps are lubricated from the fuel. When it vapor locks the pumps are run dry and can cause damage to them. If you mount the pumps in the bottom of the tank this can't happen.

Isn't boiling the fuel part of the problem too?

Not a fuel expert by anymeans... But will say on my POS I used to have major vapor lock issues. People have seen me actually putting bags of ice on or wrapping the pump in a hose water soaked rags on my old external pump setup which within about a minute would get it to fire and get me up and running. I switched to literally a cheap pump mounted inside the cell and have had 2 summers in a row now here in Vegas completely 100% problem free.
Now I say it was vapor lock, maybe the pump was overheating? Not sure, cooling it down though fixed it 100% every single time before I switched to a setup in the cell. Before going into the cell I had tried 3 different pumps from cheap to expensive all with the exact same results. I always had the pump within about 6" of the cell outlet fitting and I tried mounting them as instructed from the manufacturer as well as in positions not recommended just hoping for any miracle. I often also thought about putting a low pressure high volume pump inside the cell to supply the high pressure pump needed for the FI system if that would've fixed it too. My thinking was maybe I wasn't truly vapor locking but maybe the pump was just overheating from having the suck the fuel out of the cell? I never did try that though cause an in the tank high pressure pump was just as easy and well, turned out to be effective also.
Now this is backyard poor boy non exotic fab type stuff, none of your high end I'm a badass offroad racer type thing so take it as you will...

Yes I believe it boils the fuel on the suction side. When you put the fuel under a vacuum it lowers the boiling point. The deeper the cell the further it has to suck the easier it boils. I personally don't think it boils in the fuel rail like others have said. It would be difficult to boil when at 40-50 psi.

We have seen this problem with pumps mounted in the tank, with the pickup located on the bottom of a tank etc. The problem is altitude and fuel system. We really did not have a huge problem, just in the two higest spots of the course for just a small amount of time. I think it is from a combination of altitude and pumpgas or maybe air in the system that expands at altitude. We have seen this problem in our 7200 truck in Barstow on a cold day and also at the Parker race in the 7200 truck in February when it was cold out.I do not think the issue is because of heat. it is something else and we really want to figure it out. Fly- As for Fuel pressure regulator we run an EFI system not a carborator so this is how our system works... Fuel tank, Fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel rail, cross over to other fuel rail then fuel pressure regulator backing up constant pressure to the fuel rails then rest of fuel flows back to tank.

Jerry, on those cold days, by chance did you actually physically touch the pumps to see how hot they were? Only asking cause as I said in my story above, I kind of assumed it was vapor locking on me but I also wondered if the pumps working to suck the fuel were actually just over heating. It was always in the back of my head that when I wrapped them in a wet rag or put a bag of ice on them all I was doing was cooling them down enough to work again. Heck, maybe they were actually vapor locking right inside the pump from the heat it built up? It was always a summer issue for me though so I automatically assumed vapor lock.
On those cold days though you speak of, it would be interesting if the pumps were physically hot? Would a small low pressure high volume in take pump to supply to your high pressure inline pump help?

There is a guy named Wayne Israelson "zukizzy" www.alltechmotorsports.com He does a intank fuel system that WORKS. He does alot for Ultra 4 KOH, and some class 1's We were having alot of fuel issues in our 1400 truck. And I have to say It works. I know they have a system set up at ORW Temecula. Dez can tell you alot about them and how good they work. These have yet to have a DNF in a race. Hope this helps someone.....
