Re: Gordon Officially Disquallyfied
i sure hope with nascar behind him for the most part, that the guy spends his time working on this program on more of a full time basis like his competition does. he's done amazingly well when you consider he has only approached dakar on basically a part time schedule but if he can dedicate more time and effort on a steady basis, he and his team won't burn out trying to get everything done in a hurry like in the past. it's always been frantic and hectic and they need to get on a schedule like it's a regular job instead of running around like chickens with their heads chopped off trying to get it together in time. too much margin for error when you're in a big rush and you end up forgetting things like shipping your big support truck with all the parts and extra tires on it in case you lease out the second truck at the last minute..he should have had both his support trucks down there anyway and it was a distraction waiting for the other truck to show up.. when vw rolled into lisbon for 2006 they had more support trucks than you can imagine...it was awesome watching them parade through town. it was like a giant f u c k i n g invasion..if he has two big ass support trucks then he should use em' both with a plan in place in case he leases out the 2nd h3 at the last minute. hopefully he's got the time now to do it right and go down there and dominate. sorry to veer away from the thread topic. carry on.

I think the "elephant in the room" is can he afford that? Obviously he has lots of resources, but he is essentially a privateer in the Dakar, without any major sponsorship from the auto industry. Besides Toyo, he is his own sponsor, plus whatever he gets from renting car #2.
He certaintly can win, he showed that this year, but I'm not sure its worth it if he blows all his money.

Now that Robby has his own energy drink all of his racing efforts can be justified as advertising. That is why you see the donuts and jumping the podium- to get air time and exposure. South America is an emerging market for energy drinks and Robby wants his share of it. Winning Dakar would be a great way to do that... and hey beating the French probably wouldn't suck either.

both support trucks are purpose built and really only good for one thing the way they sit right now [money already "blown"] and that's dakar support. now if he figures he can basically build another h3 out of the parts he has on one truck, i see your point. but he was spread too thin last year as it turned out and for what it costs to ship to lima this year instead of buenas aires, i don't think he can afford not to send em' both. what good is a purpose built support/ chase vehicle if it's thousands of miles away?

I agree. I suppose the decision he has to make every year is regardless if he wins or loses, how does the Dakar effect his other racing? both fiancially and scheduling. Nascar doesnt intersting me in the slightest, but everyone says "it pays the bills" for him. Fortunetly, in the end, he is the boss. If he wants to race the Dakar, then he is going to race the Dakar.
I just hope it is in a desert-type vehicle. MINIs and BMWrs simply are not as entertaining.
