Problem you have is this is "not" a sealed class, so trying to decide what engine is not the issue. Do you want to remain air cooled or not? The guys that want change class race the least and don't own type 4's. My vote is NO on sealed motors, if you can't afford to race unlimited class then don't build unlimited car!! Or pick a few races and go for it!
Other than jrv no one has went crazy on an engine in this class because wheelbase limits the need. So everyone can build a good type 4 and be competitive. I don't have any concerns about his motor and I'm sure AJ, Belk and others with good motor packages would not be afraid to race him any day!
You want a good poll? Ask all the guys that want change how races they have ran in past 3 years and how many could commit to if there was change? My guess they could not race anymore than they do now!!!
And Varshay gets thrown under the bus again !! Believe me , I wouldn't build another one if I could ,

Jim, thankyou for suggesting a T4. In my situation the biggest issue is whose going to maintain it (T4)? For all you guys in SoCal there is 5-10 builders within a few hrs drive. For me they have to be shipped, Or I can go to my local guy and trust that the motors going to hold up (2 blown motors/2 races later??)Said I wouldn't go racing again, until I could solve this engine thing. Perhaps a T4 will be the answer? Don't know. Yes racing is expensive but another engine option could get me out there "more often" just like other teams, the more reliable my engine package the more I can spend to actually race.
Re-read the clip I got off WideOpenBaja/What is your opinion of the Subie?
SUBARU POWER
A few years ago, Wide Open Baja Technical Director Tom Morris started to look for an alternative to the Porsche engine, which was getting expensive to build and required a lot of maintenance. Subaru enthusiasts will find it of no surprise that Wide Open Baja decided to switch to Subaru engines. It was a natural replacement because the SUBARU BOXER engine is so close in shape and size to the Porsche engine, and it maintains the benefit of its low center of gravity. More importantly, the stock Subaru engines quickly proved more robust and, hence, less expensive to maintain.
Makes sense. Natural replacement....says it all about VW power.

Stop it Jim; just stop!!!
It is not fair if everyone that wants to play, can't play, AYSO rules apply here!
P.s. It is a VW class, not just air cooled and there are VW water pumper options for all the defensive players in the back field.

I was at the Del Mar Fair today with my family and guess what was the best sounding engine, Erik Irvine's type IV ! So good under the roof with the echo.

Shipping your engine tthe engine builder is no big deal, lots of guys do it. It only cost a few hundred bucks and is well worth it.

I have raced all but 2 events over 3 years in one class or another but then you know me right. Its real easy to race BITD when you live in vegas, and Lucerne is a killer drive from LA right. Show some heart and pony up a 24 hour drive each way and then lets talk. How many races did you do, or are you just a tire kicker?
You knew going in it was a VW class. It pretty much says it all when you say you dont want to waste your money to adhear to the rules.
This is a long time established class, no matter how hard you try it will never be a 5 car without a VW engine. You eco guys are mixed up, you think you want to race cl 5 but your not willing to put up the money to do so, you want a rule change to accomodate you. Class 5 does not need your ecos to survive & there is no good reason to change the rules because your not willing to spend the money to conform to them. Some of the excuses some of you are making are plain stupid. cl5 hasent realy changed that much in the last 20 years, sure there are always advancements in racing but the concept has basicly remained the same over the years. The thing that has changes is now we have the internet and that allows people to come on here and whine about how the rules should be changed for them. I guess it boils down to if your not willing to invest in a good type 4 then you should pick another class. It makes no difference how many races you enterin the future because eventuly you will be gone from the sport (if you have been around the sport for any amount of time you know this is true) but class 5 will still be around. There are many championship drivers that spent their time racing cl5 that are no longer around & I can tell you none of them ever came up with such stupid ideas to change the class to accomodate them, they built cars that met the rules & they all knew that they were signing up to race a class that cost a lot of money to support. If you want to race a 5 car then you need to man up like all the 5 guys of the past and present have.
Im going to post a pic of my 5 car as soon as I find my chassis builders web site

[QUOTE=frostbite36;1428803]Ryan, good to hear from ya bro...have you been racing lately? We are campaigning the new engine option in class-12 at SNORE this year...I have been yearning to do something similar in class-5U...I remember those heated arguments back in that thread late last year...now look at us: Parkhouse Gang just won the Baja 500 with that motor setup...Go "Cheater" and company!!
Frosty I,m building my Scott Boyd 12 car chassis as we speak....The car should be ready late 2013..Going Eco Tech as I picked up two with less than 20,000miles from work for $400 complete...I work at a Gm dealer...Going class 10 with 934 rear cv and FODRILL king kongs and 4 over arms...5 speed ect.I,m a working class guy no "MOMMY OR DADDY" MONEY here...Also I jumped on the 12 car option for a reason...Like more cars will turn out if passed.Looks like it worked brother, I,ve been helping and co-doging with my friend Josh Rigsby class 1 driver in Mexico and U.S....Getting seat time and chasing because I dont use people I help them....Carma is a epic lady....You ever need help in Vegas or Califorina get ahold of me.....As you were class 5 U....

"PRO PHOTO"
I think illiterate people calling anything "stupid" is extraordinarily hilarious.
The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is that one comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won't.

Re: Class 5 only
Can we get a rule change so we can enjoy a beer at the main pits and spectate somewhat close to the actual race course again? I miss the good old days, and tired of arguing about motors. This could go on for 300 pages and nobody will agree.
