Re: Class 5 only
No, unfortunately not - for the like the 20th time or so. The new car still isn't ready. Also for the 20th time, first planned race is December but that's also kind of a roll of the dice at this point. The car is headed home for a month or so but I'm still hopeful that we finish fixing all the bad welds and get the rest of the small fabrication done in time to race at least once this year. If not, there's always next year.
If any of this bs had actually been true MAYBE I'd be racing again by now.

Looks like a fun project. I've also got a full set of weddle internals for that box if/when the time comes. Buy the engine and they're yours for free.

Re: Class 5 only
A couple of things here...
Why is there a push to make every class budget friendly for the beginning racer? Isn't that why there are limited classes? I would like to see class 5 be a class of race car drivers. Not full of beginning racers with little to no talent or driving skill. Keep it so class 5 requires some experience and talent to race and win in. Not luck. We aren't gambling on slot machines, we are driving purpose built race cars.
Also, I can't remember who said it, but they said who is going to notice the difference between a 5 car with an air cooled motor and a water pumper driving by at 5k rpm's. Anyone who has been to 2 desert races knows the difference in sound between a VW and everything else out there. A water cooled 4 cylinder will never sound as bad arse as an air cooled VW. The 10 cars sound like rice burners from fast and the furious. They don't sound like off road cars. Class 5 sounds like an off road race car. A little piece of me will die inside when I hear rice burners driving by with a 5 unlimited number on it.
I'm a fairly young dude, and I think what makes these sealed motors much more appealing to new peeps getting into the sport is the lack of knowledge required to run these engines. All you need to do to drive one of these ecotecs is know how to change the oil. This one fact alone appeals to someone who is lazy and doesn't want to put in the work to take care of a race motor. I'm not saying that you guys that are pushing for this h2o option are lazy, I'm just talking about most of the younger generation in general.
Why get your hands dirty crawling around an engine cage tuning the carb when you can hook up your Mac Book, change some numbers, keep your manicured girly hands free of grease and oil, and not get a drop of oil on your $75 v-neck and $220 true religion jeans AND keep your $55 Justin Beiber haircut looking pristine for the ladies?
I've put more miles on my Baja in the past month than most of you will in a race season. I don't currently race in class 5, and unfortunately I doon' currently own a class 5. I do own a really cool baja bug though. My car was built in the early eighties ( my father hadn't even graduated high school when my car was built) to class 5 standards at that time. It sits that way now. Unfortunately the car wouldn't pass roll cage specs so I can't race it. Thus I have excepted the fact that I own a baja bug, not a 5 unlimited. % unlimited is a class I would like to race in.
I'm currently saving my money to build a race car. I would like to get in a 5 unlimited, not a 5b. I'd rather race against people that followed the rules and didn't create another class because they weren't willing to spend the money in a class the way the rules are written to be competitive.
I understand most of you want the rule change so you can race more. I get that, but why change the rules of a class that has long standing tradition instead of migrating to a class that has the options your looking for already in place? Also, when was the last time a top running ecotec team ran a full season with ONLY oil changes to the motor? let alone 2? I know the baja challenge cars run those subaru engines with great reliability but they aren't ONLY doing oil changes on a competitive motor running at the front of a hard charging class for a season.
Sorry about the rant and the great American novel I just wrote. I know my opinion is worth very little, but I would just like to see the class stay traditional. Also, fwiw, class 5 is the second coolest class in off road racing.A very close second behind class 11.

True I am not for the change. It's a classic class that has character and deep history that we all appeciate and that's the common bond. It's amazing how many valid points there are on both sides of this discusssion, I totaly respect each and everyone's opnion. I think that's just being an adult and civil. That said we'll race whatever the current or future rules allow.
I hope some of you make it to Texas sometime and take advantage of the new Class 5U BRT rules. Come on!
